Department summary

Duties

  • Plan, coordinate, execute and followup on lab research activities, ensuring that all activities are compliant with university policy. Conduct safetyrelated activities such as hazard assessments and training for new personnel.
  • Communicate regularly with project investigators and other project personnel, including collaborators.
  • Carry out experiments and assist project personnel such as students and postdoctoral fellows with laboratory experimentation. Assist with routine sample preparation according to SOPs, including the collection and routine analysis of samples generated through laboratory experimentation.
  • Conduct data collection, performing data entry and routine analyses. Prepare written reports providing detailed information on laboratory research activities, with a focus on methodologies user for experiment execution and sample collection.
  • Assist with plant experiments conducted in phytotron facilities at the University of Alberta and with biochemical experiments conducted on campus at the University of Alberta.
  • Maintain the operational status of laboratory research equipment and place orders for required equipment and supplies as required for laboratory research.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of a 4year degree in biological sciences or equivalent
  • Familiarity with workplace health and safety best practices required. Completion of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Concepts in Biosafety and Laboratory and Chemical Safety training.
  • Demonstrated experience with protein biochemistry and corresponding analytical techniques.
  • Experience processing large sample cohorts.
  • Demonstrated prior experience working with and processing plants and plant samples.
  • Demonstrated abilities with respect to organization attentiveness to detail and ability to conduct work accurately.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstration of positive people skills facilitating teamwork and collaboration with others

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sterile tissue culture.
  • Experience with molecular cloning.
  • Demonstrated experience with automated sample processing platforms.
