Contracts Specialist - Oil Sands

The Opportunity:


We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Contracts Specialist to become a vital part of the Oil Sands team at Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), one of Canada's leading energy producers.

At Canadian Natural, our Supply Management Professionals play a vital role in supporting the operational activities of Canadian Natural's Conventional, Thermal, and Oil Sands production.

As a Contracts Specialist in the Oil Sands team, you will be responsible for all aspects of the sourcing cycle, including:

developing sourcing strategies, issuing Request for Proposals (RFP) and Expressions of Interest (EOI)), completing proposal evaluations and commercial negotiations, developing contract awards and issuing contracts,.

With a high level of engagement with our operational teams, you will be a key member of a dynamic team that drives change and seeks continuous improvements in our supply management processes.


Your expertise in contract management will be instrumental in facilitating the successful execution of our operations, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, and fostering positive relationships with our suppliers.

With exposure to all phases of the contracting process, from developing cost analytics and contracting and negotiation plans, to executing on contracting plans and leading the contract management requirements for a portfolio of contracts, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on our business by driving change and working with a variety of stakeholders to maximize efficiency.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Actively contribute to vendor development and robust supplier relationship management programs, fostering strong partnerships and driving continuous improvement
  • Conduct thorough marketplace research and perform insightful data analysis to provide valuable insights and support strategic contracting and sourcing decisionmaking
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive reports and metrics, including detailed spend evaluations and cost comparisons, enabling informed business decisions
  • Demonstrate exceptional time management skills to drive results within tight timelines, while diligently tracking action items and collaborating closely with key internal stakeholders
  • Conduct comprehensive contract risk assessments, evaluating terms and conditions, and recommend effective risk mitigation strategies to safeguard the organization's interests
  • Foster seamless collaboration with crossfunctional teams, including Legal, Finance, and Operations, ensuring contractual alignment and compliance with established requirements
  • Lead sourcing and contracting activities for an assigned portfolio of contracts
  • Work with internal stakeholders to collaboratively establish longterm contract and sourcing plans for an assigned portfolio
  • Play a key role in supporting contract negotiations, leveraging expertise to assess favorable terms and conditions that align with organizational objectives
  • Monitor and evaluate contract performance, proactively addressing any issues, and ensuring all parties uphold contractual obligations and service level agreements
  • Support contract compliance efforts and facilitate audits, engaging with internal and external auditors, providing necessary documentation, and addressing findings and recommendations
  • Leverage relationship building skills to develop an understanding of the business requirements to ensure that contracts are fit for purpose and internal stakeholders are kept informed throughout the sourcing and contracting lifecycle
  • Stay updated with current industry trends, regulations, and best practices. Engage in continuous learning to enhance contract management methodologies and contribute to organizational growth
  • Prepare, administer, and efficiently manage contracts, including change orders and amendments as needed, ensuring smooth contract management through all stages of the lifecycle
  • Establish and meticulously maintain auditable contract files, ensuring proper documentation is readily available for reference and compliance purposes

  • Job location: Calgary, Alberta
Shift Schedule: 5x- Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day

  • Eligible for relocation pursuant to Canadian Natural's Relocation Regular Policy

Skills & Qualifications:


  • Typically 5+ years of contract management experience with a university degree or related postsecondary education
  • Desire to pursue or completion of a Supply Chain Management Professional designation is considered an asset
  • Practical experience with contract development, including exposure to negotiating contract terms and conditions and leading commercial negotiations
  • Experience with contract management systems
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Power Point and Word
  • Strong verbal
