Job Description:


Reporting to the Manager of Counselling & Welcome Centre, this member of the Counselling team will predominantly offer one to one counselling appointments to students from across the College, between the hours of 8:00 a.m.

and 5:00 p.m.

A Counsellor is responsible for assisting students and potential students to function effectively as learners and as individuals by helping them understand, prevent or overcome personal, social or educational problems that may hinder learning or their ability to cope with everyday living.


This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of presenting concerns including academic, career and mental health challenges.

Work may also include facilitating groups and/or providing workshops and in-class presentations, and other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

As a member of the Counselling team, this role may also be called upon to intervene in cases where a student presents with a risk of suicide or provide support to students in response to a critical incident.

The role may also require that technology be utilized to provide tele-counselling. (technical support provided).

All members of the Counselling Services team are expected to employ empirically validated techniques and professional standards of practice in the execution of all aspects of their role.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or closely related field;
  • Minimum of 1,600 hours (equivalent to 2 years full time) of recent (within the past 5 years) client contact experience in the provision of counselling services (postmasters);
  • Training and/or certification in suicide risk assessment and intervention;
  • Eligible for registration with one of the colleges approved to regulate the provision of psychotherapy in Ontario (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in counselling in a postsecondary education institution;
  • Demonstrated training and experience offering one to one counselling including offering service remotely;
  • Demonstrated superior group facilitation skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in a walkin and singlesession counselling environment, including experience in meeting the needs of people in emotional distress;
  • Demonstrated experience working within current models of support service delivery;
  • Demonstrated experience in Career counselling;
  • Demonstrated training and experience implementing psychoeducational and therapeutic groups;
  • Demonstrated training and experience conducting suicide risk assessments and interventions;
  • Demonstrated ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Demonstrated competence in effectively providing services to individuals representing a variety of cultures;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resources and referral options in the community;
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated computer skills; including the proficient use of an electronic client record system.
