The

Student Services department's role in student success is to create a culture and environment that unleashes the full potential of all the students at SAIT. The Opportunity


Reporting to the Manager, Lamb Learner Success Centre, the part time tutor for English as an Additional Language (EAL) students will work with individuals and small groups of SAIT students in specific course or academic skill areas (e.g.

reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, etc.).

The EAL Tutor may also collaborate directly with particular instructors as well, offering support to a class as a whole or to individuals needing extra help to keep up and to go further.

The EAL tutor is also responsible for maintaining accurate records of attendance and updating resources to support the varying needs of EAL learners at SAIT.


Note:
This position is a 1 year contract at 0.5 FTE.


The Role:


  • Determine students' proficiency levels and identify their specific needs.
  • Develop customized support and resources tailored to individual students or small groups, considering their language proficiency, and educational goals.
  • Support and guide students in all aspects of English language learning, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, using effective teaching strategies and techniques.
  • Plan and deliver engaging and interactive lessons that foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment, incorporating a variety of instructional methods, resources, and technologies.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and evaluate students' progress, adjusting teaching strategies and materials as necessary to address individual learning needs.
  • Foster cultural sensitivity and promote crosscultural understanding among students by incorporating a variety of topics and activities into the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with SAIT faculty and staff to provide ongoing EAL support.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
  • Stay updated on current trends and best practices in EAL instruction and actively seek professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development sessions, and events as required.

Qualifications:


Education & Experience

  • An undergraduate degree or Master's degree in English language teaching, applied linguistics or related field
  • Minimum Level 1 TESL Canada certification
  • A minimum of three years' experience in teaching English as a second language to kids and young learners
  • Prior teaching experience in EAP and ESL adult learning settings
  • Familiarity with English language proficiency frameworks and standardized tests commonly used in EAL programs
  • Experience teaching newcomers
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Prior CLB assessment experience is an asset

Skills Required:


  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Strong aptitude for mentoring and coaching others
  • Strong emotional intelligence and social awareness
  • Strong communication, both written and verbal
  • Flexibility and adaptability to adjust teaching strategies and materials based on individual student needs.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Previous SAIT teaching experience will be considered an asset
