SUMMARY OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reporting to the Adoption Supervisor, the Adoption Worker will work within the Resource service area of the Child, Youth and Family Wellbeing Department.
The Adoption Worker may be asked to perform any of the following adoption related responsibilities:


NATURE OF POSITION:


  • Receives and processes all inquiries from potential adoption clients. (This includes telephone and online inquiries, and written requests).
  • Responds to potential adoption clients by conducting information sessions, intake home visits, determining the eligibility of potential adoptive parents, and preparing assessments of each applicant.
  • Conducts intake interviews with assigned applicants and records the intake assessment.
  • Conducts in home interviews both individually, and with the family as a whole, to complete SAFE home studies on assigned families; maintains a file of approved adoptive homes.
  • Provides PRIDE preservice training program and any other necessary training as deemed required for prospective adoptive parent(s).
  • Seeks adoptive homes for children and supervises children who have been placed in adoptive homes.
  • Completes reports on children's adjustment in respective homes prior to finalization of the adoption process; completes and files all necessary court documents in order to finalize adoptions.
  • Represents the Society at Adoption Resource Exchange meetings, and other local area adoption meetings, as applicable.
  • Liaises with other C.A.S. Adoption Departments.
  • Acts as witness for Court when required.
  • Provides evidence for Court when required.
  • Provides information on the Adoption Department, and its procedures, to other staff/departments and liaises with other staff regarding children being placed for adoption.
  • Provides adoption information to the community.
  • Provides birth parent counselling as required.
  • Refers birth parents to independent lawyers to complete legal documentation for consent adoptions (Consent to Adopt and Affidavit of Mother, including Extended Society Care Applications) and provides post relinquishment counselling to the birth parents.
  • Supports openness planning prior to and during a child or youth's placement on adoption probation by coordinating with birth family and people significant to the child.
  • Participates in Alternate Dispute Resolution, openness mediation as appropriate to support openness planning and negotiations.
  • Provides post adoption services such as managing openness by receiving and transferring letters, cards, and gifts, between birth families and adoptive families, processing adoption subsidies, advise regarding services available in community, and individual counselling.
  • Incorporates and utilizes new policies and procedures in daily activities.
  • Records all assigned cases on a regular basis as required by the Child, Youth and Family Services Act; completes weekly time sheets, monthly mileage sheets, and other required administrative forms on a timely and accurate basis.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective working relationships as an adoption team member, providing backup coverage to other team members.
  • Participates actively and effectively at team meetings.
  • Completes other related professional duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:


  • A thorough knowledge of child welfare legislation and Society policies, procedures and guidelines.
