Applications are invited for the position of Desktop and Application Technology Specialist in the Information Technology Services department, located at the Welland Campus.

The salary range is $36.19/hr (Pay Band I $36.19 to $41.94) for a 40 hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.


Responsibilities include:


  • Architect, plan, implement and maintain the Microsoft Azure virtual desktop environment utilized in labs, libraries, and for student remote access to College resources
  • Perform administrative tasks within the virtual environment such as creation, and ongoing maintenance of base images, virtual machine pools, monitoring system performance and other administrative tasks required to maintain a functioning platform
  • Works closely with other ITS teams where changes or issues impact the larger IT environment, such as network, server, database or other
  • Manage or lead the technical portion of projects involving systems the incumbent supports, or other significant desktop components
  • Purchase all required equipment, components and supplies to address installations, upgrades, repair, and service of all College physical desktop computing equipment, remaining within budgets agreed upon with the user or management
  • Utilize desktop management systems and servers for the administration, and maintenance of virtual and physical lab hardware and software, distribute images, software updates, patches and reconfiguration scripts on an individual, lab, campus, or college wide scale
  • Support a wide range of desktop technology including computers, printers and desktop peripherals of all types, mobile devices, signage and signs
  • Respond to tickets escalated from the ITS Service Desk, analyze issues often involving complex and integrated systems to confirm symptoms, and identify root causes
  • Consult with stakeholders (users, other analysts, vendors, business or ITS management) document issues, advising and obtaining agreement related to resolution of issues or fulfillment of hardware or software requests
  • Provide guidance and support to students and employees of the College in the proper use of desktop and other technology
  • Sound, lighting and computer support for special events hosted by college officials, academic departments and outside organizations

Required Qualifications:


  • Two (2) year diploma/degree in Computer Programming, Electronics, or Computer Engineering Technician or related field of study
  • Minimum five (5) years experience supporting a large complex enterprise computing environment, including the administration and utilization of enterprise management tools for virtualization, software delivery, licensing, or other related platforms
  • Hands on experience in a large, busy enterprise environment, providing hardware and software support for various clients
  • Experience managing projects involving large scale deployment of hardware and software assets
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise scripting languages
  • Working knowledge of data communications theory, network and cabling components and protocols
  • Computing hardware expertise in Windows and Mac
  • Demonstrated strong communication, problem solving, analytical and design skills in a fast paced and structured customer serviceoriented environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
