- Lead a small team responsible for in-house end-to-end payroll administration for approximately 1,000 salaried and hourly employees.
- Ensure completion of all year-end activities in compliance with Canadian payroll legislation.
- Establish and maintain controls to meet audit requirements, including information security and segregation of duties.
- Lead a team of direct reports and develop team members through coaching, training, objective setting, providing ongoing feedback, and recognition.
- Support the continuous identification, implementation, and documention of process improvements to streamline payroll activities and facilitate collaboration amongst other PC&L teams and the rest of the AER.
- Maintain current knowledge regarding applicable legislation, best practices, and industry standards.
- Build positive relationships with PC&L colleagues and employees in the organization.
- Bachelor degree or diploma in accounting, human resources, or general management.
- A Canadian payroll designation is required.
- A minimum of 7 years of hands-on end-to-end payroll processing experience in a mid-sized organization and a minimum of 2 years of leadership experience.
- Experience with in-house payroll processing using Workday and payroll accounting is required.
- Experience with pension / savings plans and flexible benefit plans are considered assets.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and emotional intelligence competence, combined with strong communication skills and ability to have difficult conversations.
- Strong problem solving, analytical and decision-making competencies, combined with sound judgement and initiative.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in a fast paced, deliverable based environment.
- Ability to critically solution issues or processes as required while ensuring any required stakeholder engagement is optimally executed.

The Opportunity
The People, Culture & Learning team (PC&L) is recruiting for a Manager, Payroll to join our team at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). As the Manager, Payroll, you will lead a small, engaged, and experienced team responsible for end-to-end payroll administration using Workday, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation.
This role reports to the Director, Total Rewards and works closely with the rest of the Total Rewards team, as well as the People Services and Finance teams. You will provide hands on support to manage escalations and build strong relationships within your immediate team and across the AER.
The AER's PC&L branch is a dynamic team of professionals working collaboratively to provide value to the employees and stakeholders of the AER while maintaining a focus on personal wellness, professional development, and work life balance.
