You can learn more about Emily Carr University at As the Creative Lead, you will develop and execute creative design concepts, strategies and campaigns for Emily Carr University (ECU) and the many departments the Communications + Marketing (C+M) team supports within the university.

This role provides day-to-day supervision to the Graphic Designer and closely collaborates with members of the C+M department on integrated, cross-functional communications and marketing initiatives in support of the university's goals and priorities.

The Creative Lead is responsible for upholding the integrity of ECU's brand and works with the Executive Director of Communications, Marketing + Public Affairs, and the Director of Marketing + Digital Strategy, to ensure ECU's brand remains relevant in a rapidly changing, highly competitive market and digital landscape.

Some Typical Duties Include:


  • Acts as the university's brand identity expert, educates on brand adherence and leads in establishing and communicating visual identity guidelines all with the goal of growing ECU's brand recognition, reach and awareness.
  • Develops and executes innovative and effective design concepts from beginning to end, aligned with creative briefs and in sync with communications and marketing objectives geared to reaching and connecting with target audiences.
  • Provides strategic visual communications and marketing advice to senior administrators, staff and faculty; works collaboratively with internal partners to understand a project's goals and objectives and leads a consensusbuilding creative design process to achieve desired results.
  • Supervises and mentors the Graphic Designer in daytoday operations by assigning and prioritizing work, providing constructive feedback and quality oversight; contributes to building and maintaining a culture of inclusivity, trust, support and care.
  • Conceptualizes and delivers innovative and contemporary design assets and provides creative art direction for a full portfolio of annual and unique/oneoff projects with a high public profile.
  • Manages projects and is responsible for production calendar planning. Establishes and oversees daytoday workflows from inception to delivery for creative projects; builds and maintains processes to ensure the creative team runs in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Works with the Director of Marketing + Digital Strategy to support the university's student recruitment and strategic enrollment management goals through the development of creative design assets for effective recruitment marketing campaigns. Similarly, creates dynamic materials to engage the public and attract donors and supporters by visually positioning the university as worthy of support.
  • Collaborates with members of the communications and marketing team to create impactful multimedia campaigns across digital platforms for internal and external audiences, bringing campaigns to life through strong visual storytelling techniques that keep ECU on the cuttingedge steps ahead of the university's competitors.
  • Performs research to stay current with industry trends, grow and maintain knowledge of creative tools and design and visual storytelling trends in the postsecondary sector to ensure ECU remains relevant, contemporary and distinct in its visual presentation. Provides advice to senior leaders on emerging best practices and recommends shifts in brand strategy as appropriate.
  • Provides creative oversight for the university's website; works with web content and marketing team members, and contracted web developers, to continually improve the look, feel and user experience of the university's website with creative design principles, usability, and accessibility front of mind.
