Introduction & Key Role Objectives


WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland, the Philippines, and South Korea.

We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering and water treatment systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

The principal function of this position is to support the growth and development of WJ Groundwater Canada's Dewatering Division.

This includes business development, the management of dewatering projects and working with the Engineering Manager and Contracts and Design team in their role in the design and tender of dewatering projects.


Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Carry out Contract and Commercial management duties.
  • Liaise and work with the technical staff to ensure the technical delivery of our projects is of a high standard to maintain our "technical expertise" position within the industry.
  • Maintain oversight of Project Management activities and staff to support the successful operations of Dewatering projects and ensure high quality record of contractual activities. This includes ensuring Project Managers are accountable for their project deliverables.
  • Overseeing commercial diligence of Project Management staff, including ensuring that Project Managers adhere to contract terms, issue timely change order requests and promptly follow up with clients for required assistance.
  • Lead the Dewatering team to ensure successful completion and delivery of projects.
  • Support the Finance Department and Project Managers in the commercial success of projects and in revenue collection including overseeing the preparation of AFPs at the end of the project billing cycles.
  • Contribute to the development of Company strategic objectives.
  • Provide expert advice, training and leadership to Project Management, Engineering and other technical staff. Support professional and technical development of Project Management and Operations Team.
  • Assist the Logistics Manager to find the best quality and prices for dewatering system equipment and related products.
  • Perform project management and dissemination responsibilities, including: drafting of regular progress reports as requested by the President, clients, and project contracts; authoring of project deliverables as specified in the project contract, in collaboration with the other project members and any other similar contribution to the project according to its programme of work.
  • Manage site efficiencies in order to reduce superfluous unionized labour hours on projects.
  • Manage the hiring and dismissal of Project Management staff.
  • Be responsible for own health and safety and that of your team and prepare Risk Assessments for our activities. Audit site staff to ensure safe working practices are being followed.


The above is not exhaustive and you will be expected to undertake any other duties which may reasonably fall within the level of responsibility and competence.


Qualifications & Experience
A motivated and hardworking individual with good written and verbal communication skills is essential.

Minimum 7 years' experience within the construction or similar industry managing projects and site staff in a similar environment, or 3 years within WJ in a Project Management role and has demonstrated sufficient skills and knowledge.


  • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental or Civil Engineering.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Dewatering and/or groundwater management methodologies and technology.
  • Knowledge and experience in environmental and regulatory compliance and documentation related to Water Management Regulations.
  • Resourcefulness, initiative, and the ability to work unsupervised in often difficult site conditions.
  • The ability to plan and organise own workload as well as that of the Dewatering Project Management team.
  • Experience and confidence in managing others.
  • Comprehensive awareness of commercial issues, ideally including a good understanding and knowledge of construction industry contracts.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills the ability to communicate sometimes highly complex concepts is an essential requirement.

Working Conditions


The role is predominately office based at our head office, but you will be expected to visit our clients' sites for meetings, site walkovers, site inductions and undertake project briefings within Ontario as required.


Working with WJ colleagues and our clients for the installation of Dewatering systems in both outdoor & indoor environments (often within tunnels, adits and shafts, which are frequently classified as low to medium risk confined spaces).
