Environmental Specialist:


Reporting to the Senior Environmental Specialist, this position is primarily responsible for compliance inspections, implementation of environmental programs, supporting operations, and regulatory reporting at Victoria Shipyards (VSL).

This role would also support the Environment Department through program development, and audit and inspection performance.


Note:

Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Victoria Shipyards located at 825 Admirals Road Victoria, B.C.



What you'll do
Operations and Environmental Programs

  • Coordinates hazardous materials sampling, packaging, and tracking; interprets and communicates results when received.
  • Regularly completes and details internal environmental inspections to ensure policies and practices are accurately implemented, assists with addressing findings.
  • Supports implementation of onsite environmental programs, including assisting with environmentalrelated committees and initiatives, and completion of VSL annual environmental action plans.
  • Handles wildlife concerns by collaborating closely with WildArc and PSPC Environmental Services to resolve onsite issues.
  • Facilitates the spill prevention and response program, including incident investigations, internal/external reporting, lessons learned meetings, and training and drills.
  • Develops project and task level Hazard Assessments with stakeholders; supports trades in the development of new environmental administrative controls (e.g., checklists, work instructions, spill prevention plans, etc.).
  • Facilitates environmental preplanning meetings for projects, as the need arises (e.g. dock bottom hazard control plan meeting).
  • Attends production meetings, prepares and presents environmental updates, including relevant inspection findings, incidents, and environmental reminders.
  • Assists with corporate projects, including environmental performance tracking, updating environmental intranet pages, etc.
  • Prepares reports for the Senior Environmental Specialist and regulators, including analyzing and interpreting environmental monitoring data (e.g., NPRI reporting).
  • Provides support to Project Managers with third party environmental equipment rentals (booms, dust boss units), and waste management and recycling services for projects.
  • Supports other departments with environmental equipment and sampling needs (e.g. creation of prefilled WHMIS labels, sandblast grit testing jars, etc.).
  • Owns the VSL Environmental budget, coordinating with the Senior Environment Specialist and VSL Facilities Manager.
Compliance and EMS

  • Conducts internal environmental audits to ensure compliance.
  • Assists with the implementation of Seaspan's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System; including maintenance and communication of the business area's Spill Contingency Plans, Environmental Best Management Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions, and the Environmental Risk Register.
  • Periodically prepares environmental and program performance summaries for the Senior Environment Specialist.
  • Ensures compliance with EGD/PSPC requirements, i.e., undocking inspection, approvals for water discharges to harbour, spill reporting, monthly inspections, etc.
Education and Communications

  • Develops and implements environmental awareness programs throughout VSL.
  • Supports Operations through procurement and management of environmental related thirdparty training, for example, TDG training for Stores personnel.
  • Develops educational materials to support environmental programs, for example, propeller press articles, toolbox talks, TV slides, posters, etc.
  • Helps to facilitate VSL and Seaspanwide environmental events.
Waste Management Area

  • Supports operation of VSL's Waste Management Area;
  • Coordinates pickups for recyclables (bottles, ink cartridges, etc.),
  • Long
- and short-term planning for improvements,

  • Training for attendants,
  • Equipment and materials purchasing (e.g. witch hats),
  • Provides functional direction related to environmental programs,
  • Assist with addressing issues (e.g. oily debris in waste skips), and
  • Acquires and ensures compliance with Hartland landfill permits.

What you'll bring

  • Recognized Diploma or degree in Environmental Science / Management or related field. Post graduate degree in related field would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability in environmental management, including environmental regulatory requirements and permitting responsibilities.
  • Proven experience working with environmental management systems.
  • Auditing experience in environmental management systems is considered an asset.
  • Industrial experience considered an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of both scientific and management principles with respect to environmental protection and waste management.
