    Position Summary

    The principal is responsible for the administration, leadership, supervision, and operation of the Seabird Island Elementary and High School.

    The principal provides quality B.C. curriculum in a learning environment that promotes language and reinforces the highly honored values of self-reliance, generosity, honesty, adaptability, and respect for self, others, and the environment. The principal must fulfill his/her responsibilities with high ethical and moral standards and serve as a positive role model for staff and students. The principal must always act in the best interests of the students and ensure that all school staff work diligently to create a positive, caring atmosphere that encourages self- discipline and promotes life-long learning.


    The principal is responsible for ensuring that school staff complies with all policies, acts and regulations governing the operation of the school. The principal has the responsibility to ensure that the school operates within defined financial parameters in delivering a curriculum that meets the needs of students of all ages. The principal must maintain ongoing contact with the Director to report on accomplishments or discuss issues that may require additional administrative, policy or financial support.


    The performance of the principal will be reviewed in part on the effectiveness of personnel, the impact and relevance of the curriculum and for the general reaction of parents in the community to the education services provided.

    This is a Term position with an end date of June 30th, 2024, with the possibility of extension.

    What you'll do

    Management and leadership

    • Performs full scope of people management activities to support Lalme' Iwesawtexw including:
      • work planning, scheduling, scheduling for unplanned absences, payroll processing and assessment of staffing need and creating overarching clinical service delivery schedules and staff rotations based on operational requirements.
      • hiring/promotion, staff development, coaching/mentoring, development plans, feedback.
      • Regularly observe, evaluate, and manage competencies of teachers and staff. Completing formal written evaluations for new staff by the end of November each year and completing formal written evaluations of all staff by end of April each year, ensuring staff are aware of performance expectations, and following through when performance is unsatisfactory.
      • conflict resolution, discipline, and termination recommendations.
      • authorizing leaves of absence.
      • ensure all employees are actively completing reports.
      • are aware of their duty to report, duty of care, boundaries, conflicts of interest, and working relationships with vulnerable individuals and families.
      • evaluating the work of staff and volunteers to ensure that programs are of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively; and
      • promoting shared team goals and collaboration among members.
    • Accountable to ensure staff are knowledgeable of applicable health and safety legislation, are trained to act appropriately in emergency situations, practice safe program delivery, and operate equipment and material safely utilizing safe work practices. Ensure that documented procedural information is available and that necessary reports/follow-up to near misses and incidents are completed in a timely manner and reported accordingly.
    • Maintain a team approach in planning and organizing the delivery of the established curriculum; and ensuring that the Instructional systems and subject matter content is introduced to students in a logical, sequential, and meaningful manner.
    • Ensure that all staff understand and adhere to the policies, acts and regulations governing the operation of the school.
    • Oversee, and manage operating budget and ensure on-track.

    Lalme' Iwesawtexw School:

    • Oversee Lalme' Iwesawtexw School's day-to-day operations, maintaining a high professional standard of instructional competency to provide a role model for other teachers.
    • Utilize a wide variety of cost-effective methods to meet educational needs and create a smooth and effective transition between grades or programs.
    • Responsible for achievement of education program goals in the strategic plan to raise academic achievement and increase high school graduation rates.
    • Encourage student responsibility, personal discipline, and self-motivation.
    • Maintain an educational environment that is warm, understanding and challenging for students and conducive to high morale, creativity, and teamwork.
    • Ensure that career guidance and life skills programs are implemented and results in each student having a career development plan that supports their education goals and career aspirations.
    • Provide parents, guardians, and funding communities with information on student progress in intellectual development, social development, career development and attendance.
    • Provide students, parents, or guardians with information to increase their ability to create a supportive home learning environment.
    • Conduct and participate in meetings with students, parents, school staff and the Education Committee to improve teamwork and communication.
    • Conduct student assemblies that promote the value of education and lifelong learning in achieving self-sufficiency in adult life.

    Relationship and team building

    • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with all levels of Seabird Island.
    • Demonstrate behaviors, actions and attitudes that are consistent with Seabird Island's vision, mission, culture, and values.
    • Provide opportunities for the enhancement and development of positive cultural identities of the staff and clients.
    • Ensure appropriate communication and consultation with the Director and other teams.
    • Ensure effective and professional communications with all internal and external service providers, committees, and workgroups.
    • Work respectfully, positively, professionally, and collaboratively with team members.

    Administration and reporting

    • Complete administrative functions, workplans, training plans, and reports and adhere to policies, procedures, and relevant practices.
    • Develop and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and concise work files, ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of all documents and records.
    • Manage expenditures within the program budgets as authorized by the Director.
    • Seek out and pursue funding opportunities – writing / contributing / submitting proposals to granting agencies.
    • Complete all funding requirement reports for funding agencies and other stakeholders, in a timely and succinct manner.
    • Provide the Director of Education with regular school activity reports, including STATS, and annual summary reports.

    Duties and Accountabilities

    • Assist in coordination with school cultural events, celebrations, and ceremonies.
    • Be a positive role model by actively supporting the vision, mission, and philosophy of Lalme' Iwesawtexw and Seabird College.
    • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Director, Executive Director, or Chief & Council.

    What you bring

    Education

    • A Master's degree in education and First Nations teaching experience.

    Experience

    • Five years leadership experience in an independent First Nations school.
    • Experience working with First Nations community or knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language.
    • Ability to be a positive role model for staff and students and inspire high academic achievement.
    • Ability to interact effectively with a variety of personality types.
    • Demonstrated leadership and administrative achievements.
    • High professional and ethical standards.
    • A knowledge and understanding of the history of trauma, the role education played in trauma, and the impacts of trauma on First Nations in Canada.
    • Ability to balance competing priorities, multitask, and to work under pressure.
    • Able to demonstrate flexibility and creativity when called upon.

    Requirements

    • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.)
    • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
    • Ability to agree as well as adhere to Seabird Island Band Human Resources (HR), Finance, and Information Technology (IT) Policies and Procedures, etc.
    • Valid BC Driver's License with a clean Driver's Abstract within the last 5 years.
    • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CRRP)

    • Administrative Assistants and School Support Staff
