Applications are invited for the position of Academic Labs Manager in the School of Trades, located at the Welland Campus.

This position is temporary and approximate dates of the appointment are March 2024 through March 2025. The salary range is $74,175 - $92,720 for a 35 hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.


Reporting to the Dean, Media, Trades and Technology, the incumbent collaborates with the Associate Dean of the School of Trades, the Manager of Apprenticeship, the Academic Business Manager as well as the College's Health and Safety Specialist, to develop and oversee safe lab environments, work practices, lab space design, and regulatory compliance in the delivery of academic, apprenticeship, contract training, pre-apprenticeship and other programs in all labs and shops.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Health and safety compliance in the operation of academic lab facilities, equipment, and materials; coordinating safety, security, maintenance, cleanliness and organization of the labs
  • Working with the Health and Safety team to support the development and implementation of relevant policies, procedures and protocols, ensuring training and compliance with the college's Health and Safety policy, Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Ontario Legislative framework and OPSEU collective agreements
  • Working with the Dean, Associate Dean and Facilities Management Services to manage space allocation, ensuring new program space and equipment needs are planned and incorporated
  • Assisting in hiring technologists, technicians, and student employees to support the academic labs, including lab maintenance and provision and maintenance of equipment and supplies required to support curriculum
  • Providing both operational and strategic leadership and guidance for safe and effective curriculum delivery in academic labs by supporting technicians and technologists and working directly with the program faculty in the academic programs
  • Collaborating with various team members to ensure supply purchases are complete, providing requirements for previously approved equipment, monitoring inventory and costing for lab equipment, perishables and consumables and ensuring cost effectiveness of all purchases

Qualifications:


  • Minimum three (3) year diploma/degree in Business, Operations Management, Leadership, Technology or similar field of study
  • Certificate of Qualification in a related field
  • Trained in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Experience in academic lab environments, particularly skilled trades labs, and/or training adults are considered assets
  • Proficient in Windows/Microsoft Office systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving, strategic thinking, planning and organizational skills
  • Understanding of inventory systems and purchasing procedures
