    Detailed Overview Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Services, is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating music therapy programs and services in the Pediatric program. Participates in the development of new programs and/or services, selection of casual staff, and preparation of performance appraisals. Conducts orientation and education sessions and provides Music Therapy programs toPediatric patients.
    Responsibilities
    1. Participates in the development of new programs and/or services by identifying services and needs and contributing to the development of operational plans, goals and objectives, philosophy, vision and mission statements as required.
    2. Performs initial assessment of referred Clients admitted to the unit by methods such as completing assessment forms, reviewing records, consulting with family, and team members, and gathering relevant information.
    3. Plans individual and/or group music therapy programs and services by establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, discussing implementation options and determining resources available.
    4. Implements music therapy programs and services utilizing diverse intervention approaches by methods such as improvisation, guided imagery, grief and loss support and individual and group treatment programs.
    5. Monitors the quality and outcome of music therapy programs by methods such as determining the purpose, method, and criteria of the evaluation, implementing recommendations, analyzing and interpreting results, and modifying and/or ceasing services as needed.
    6. Provides clinical direction to students and volunteers by methods such as instructing, observing, and monitoring services provided. Conducts performance appraisal of staff with the Manager, as necessary. Manages the placement of Music Therapy Students and Interns and conducts each student's performance appraisal.
    7. Participates in the selection of Casual Music Therapists by developing clinical questions related to Music Therapy, interviewing candidates with Manager, and making recommendations for hire.
    8. Conducts orientation and education sessions on topics related to Music Therapy by methods such as preparing, obtaining, and presenting educational material to Hospice staff, residents, families and volunteers. Prepares individualized orientation and education plans for the Casual Music Therapists, interns and students.
    9. Participates in the identification, development, review and revision of policies and procedures of the department by methods such as collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, providing input and maintaining assigned policies and procedures.
    10. Participates in quality improvement activities by methods such as identifying needs, gathering information, providing input, and developing, implementing, and evaluating these activities.
    11. Participates in relevant interdisciplinary team conferences and/or family conferences by methods such as providing information about residents on topics related to Music Therapy and contributing to the development of an interdisciplinary care plan for individual residents.
    12. Maintains records, statistical data, and reports in accordance with department, organizational and professional standards by methods such as maintaining resident documentation and completing resident attendance and workload measurement statistics.
    13. Maintains inventory of Music Therapy equipment and supplies by methods such as making recommendations regarding purchase, providing general maintenance and repair of equipment and supplies, and completing documentation to have items purchased or repaired.
    14. Participates actively on committees and task groups by methods such as gathering information prior to meeting, attending meetings, providing input, and providing updates to department.
    15. Acts as a resource person to staff, students and volunteers for issues related to music therapy by methods such as providing information and answering questions.
    16. Instructs staff and family on individual care plans as the appropriate use of recorded music, music preferences, and creating an environment related to sound appropriateness forpediatric population 0-17 years on the unit.
    17. Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications Education and Experience Baccalaureate degree in Music Therapy from a recognized educational institution plus two years recent, related experience in Music Therapy, preferably with hospice palliative care, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current member, and eligible for accreditation, with the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT). Music Therapist Accredited (MTA) credentials preferred. Skills and Abilities
    • Maintains current knowledge of developments in Music Therapy and the pediatric patient while in acute carethrough literature review, educational programs and involvement in professional groups.
    • Ability to function effectively as an interdisciplinary team member.
    • Ability to accept responsibility and exercise initiative and independent judgement.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to teach and organize work.
    • Ability to play a minimum of two musical instruments, piano and/or guitar and voice.
    • Familiar with the use of a variety of musical instruments and related equipment.
    • Ability to articulate philosophy, style, approach and benefits of music therapy in a child and family centered acute care setting.
    • Ability to apply music therapy methods, systems and techniques to children and their families.
    • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
