Job Summary


The Field Technician, Design and Construction is responsible for surveying and producing as built drawings in AutoCAD, and the field supervision of projects.

The role ensures accurate surveys and data provided to the Design and Construction (D&C) group for both internal and external customers.

Furthermore, the position ensures all information is in accordance with sound engineering practices, approved CN railway standards, specifications, procedures, and within the CN operating plan.


Main Responsibilities

  • Develop as built drawings (e.g., horizontal and vertical alignments, cross sections) utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Develop, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and budgets to maximize asset utilization and cost control within project scope and approved budget
  • Provide accurate as built surveys and technical assistance for internal projects
  • Perform surveying (e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS), robotic total station, and traditional methods) as project plans require
Working Conditions


The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday.

The role is required to work on varying shifts to cover operations that run 24/7 including weekends, holidays and emergency response.

The role requires regular travel (60%) within the region which may include overnight stays away from home, based on territory and project requirements.


Requirements:

Experience


Surveying

  • Minimum 2 years surveying experience or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in construction and surveying
  • Experience in Civil, Construction, or Geotechnical
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • 2 years Associate Degree, Licensed Surveyor in Training (LSIT) or equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain LIST within a year
  • Certified Engineer in Training (EIT) Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS)
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD design including Civil 3D
  • Strong computer skills, especially working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), and Track Inspection System (TIS)
