Position Description:


The Communications Marketing Advisor for the SicKKids Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is a project planner and implementer, gifted writer and team player with sound knowledge of graphic and web design, who has a proven ability to independently manage multiple files in a creative, efficient manner.

The individual will work with DPLM leadership, contributing to the implementation of a range of internal and external marketing communications activities to increase awareness of the activities and services offered by DPLM and support business development activities to market innovative diagnostic test to external clients.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by quickly providing diagnoses that lead to early selection of best treatment options.

DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health-care providers in Canada and around the world.


The department includes five divisions:
Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, Pathology.


Role Description

  • Develop and carry out communications activities that increase understanding of the mandate and activities of SickKids DPLM
  • Liaise with SickKids Communications and Public Affairs to ensure communications efforts are coordinated and meet organizational standards
  • Lead in the development of a DPLM specific communications plan
  • Design and draft DPLM communication material including a monthly DPLM newsletter, departmental dashboards and infographics, blogs, reports and social media content.
  • Work with the Director of Business Development to develop a comprehensive marketing plan to increase referredin diagnostic test volumes.
  • Design and develop a tool kit of promotional assets for high value referred in DPLM diagnostic tests that link to the DPLM web page.
  • Manage development and quality assurance for DPLM web content, ensuring SickKids style, branding and content guidelines.
  • Work with the DPLM Education Committee to support the planning and execution of internal and externally facing events.

Role Requirements

  • Degree/diploma in Communications; Marketing or a related area is required.
  • Significant communications or marketing experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • 35 years' experience in a relevant role.
  • Must have applied knowledge in developing marketing and promotional materials, branding, articles and web stories.
  • Knowledge of government (municipal, provincial and federal) and role in the health care system, knowledge of health science, biotechnology or laboratory services an asset
  • Familiarity and understanding of branding, graphic design and website development.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and create compelling, engaging and innovative digital content for both social media and web sites.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Handson experience with event planning and project management.
  • Ability to manage multiple interested parties and balance competing interests.
