What can I expect to do in this role?: The Privacy Specialist is responsible for assisting the Privacy Manager in ensuring Ontario Health (OH) programs comply with privacy rules and regulations. As part of this role, the Privacy Specialist provides privacy advisory services, supports privacy operations, assists in developing and implementing the privacy program, and supports the Privacy Manager as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Manager, Privacy, the Privacy Specialist is responsible for assisting the team in ensuring OH programs comply with privacy rules and regulations.

In this role, you will be part of a team that leads the development of a privacy program for some of the most exciting and transformative initiatives in Ontario.

As a Privacy Specialist, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop privacy policies and procedures.
  • May be required to conduct privacy impact assessments for small to medium complex initiatives.
  • Support investigating privacy incidents, patient inquiries, and privacy requests of any kind.
  • Identify and assessing privacy risks.
  • Provide privacy advisory and support to business teams.
  • Identify privacy requirements.
  • Develop strong relationships with various internal and external stakeholders to foster a culture of privacy.
  • Respond and provide advice and legislative interpretation for information and access requests, consent management requests, complaints, or inquiries, appeals and privacy issues under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Support privacy program projects and activities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Privacy Office.
  • Develop and deliver privacy training for Ontario Health.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and Experience:


  • Recognized access and privacy designation (CIPP/C) is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in health care, health informatics, public or business administration or another relevant field is preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years relevant experience.
  • Experience conducting privacy impact assessments is an asset.
  • Direct operational level privacy experience preferably in a health sector and/or IT environment is an asset.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of access and privacy requirements and practices, preferably related to the health and public sectors.
  • Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).
  • Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
  • Thorough understanding of "privacybydesign" and best practices.
  • Experience with conducting and/or providing oversight for privacy impact assessments including developing privacy requirements, risk mitigation plans, corporate policies and developing and/or delivering training content.
  • Knowledge of technology architecture and infrastructure, digital health solutions and services, enterprise and corporate IT including information and cyber security preferred.
  • Working knowledge of digital health technologies and information security industry standards.
  • Excel in a fastpaced and project focused environment.
  • Exceptional analytic and creative problemsolving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
