    About the School of Life Science & Business

    The School of Life Science & Business provides dynamic high-tech, hands-on learning opportunities in support of animal health, business and horticulture. The School is also home to the National Meat Training Centre and the Olds College Botanic Gardens. A variety of certificates, diplomas and applied degrees are granted from the School of Life Science & Business. Fields of study offered within the School of Life Science & Business are: Animal Health, Business, Equine, Horticulture, and the National Meat Training Centre.

    The Opportunity - Lily Collection Research Clerk 1, temporary

    The Olds College School of Life Science & Business, in cooperation with the Alberta Regional Lily Society, has a seasonal opportunity for a Lily Collection Research Clerk 1. This position will assist with the ongoing maintenance and development of the Lily Collection within the Olds College Botanic Garden and Research Plots. The work week will consist of 40 hours per week and the incumbent may be required to work very occasional weekends and/or evenings.

    Responsibilities will include:

  • maintenance of the lily collection in the Research Plots and the Botanic Gardens
  • written and photographic record keeping, data collection, evaluation, reporting, labelling and signage
  • sourcing Alberta and Prairie bred lilies to expand the collection at Olds College
  • collecting data, helping to determine the life cycle of the lily leaf beetle in Alberta, identifying or confirming the presence of Lily Leaf Beetle in various locations
  • additional insect collection work
  • additional duties in the botanic gardens
  • The successful applicant may also have an opportunity to participate in researching information relevant to the genus Lilium, preparing website information, and planting, weeding, and care of perennial collections within the Botanic Gardens and Research Plots.

    The successful applicant must be a secondary or post-secondary student prior to and/ or immediately after their work period. They will be a self-motivated team player with good organizational skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Due to the physically demanding nature of some components of this position and the variables associated with horticulture work the incumbent must be physically fit and able to work outdoors for extended periods. In addition, the incumbent must provide and wear CSA approved footwear and appropriate clothing for work outdoors in all weather, and successfully complete WHMIS certification training.

    An educational and/or relevant work experience in the area of landscape management, horticulture, agriculture, botany or other life sciences would be an asset. A valid driver's license is required. Some travel within Alberta may be required.
