***Under the direction of the Support Service Director, the Cook prepares food items through appropriate methods such as roasting, frying, steaming, poaching, boiling and baking; including those items for general or therapeutic diets. Assists in the planning of a variety of menus and supports a resident focused food service environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Prepares the appropriate meals using the appropriate cooking methods according to the posted menu, as per production schedule, recipes in quantities required.


  • Prepares therapeutic diets according to the posted menu in quantities required.
  • Bakes food items either from scratch (e.g. bread, traditional buns) or from prepared mixes or dough.
  • Tastes food items for palatability and temperature and adjusts accordingly.
  • Assigns tasks to dietary aides in the absence Support Service Manager and provides support to food service staff.
  • Provides service of appropriate meals at specified times.
  • Responsible for storage of food and related items and maintains food rotations.
  • Ensures documentation is completed for licensing requirements.
  • Performs cleaning duties.
  • Signs incoming delivery slips, checks orders to make sure they are correct.
  • Notifies FSC immediately of any problems connected with supplies, equipment etc.
  • Ensures safety practices and procedures are adhered to.
  • Participates in quality Assurance Programs.
  • Attends staff inservice programs and meetings. Maintains a current knowledge of and complies with all facility policies and procedures.
  • Interacts with residents in a manner that respects their individual rights and dignity.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Qualifications:

Graduation from a recognized 12 month program in
cooking or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Food Safe levels 1 and 2

Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to communicate with residents with a variety of cultural backgrounds and make them feel valued and welcome.
Ability to work with residents in a manner that supports their independence and enhances their dignity and respects their privacy

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Ability to organize work and multitask in a team environment with overlapping duties and responsibilities

Must be able to work all shifts as applicable to the position.

Ability to organize work.

Education:


  • Secondary School (preferred)

Experience:


  • Cooking: 2 years (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (required)
