    Role Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Safety Team Lead, the Crane Safety Specialist is a technical member of the team supporting and collaborating with other team members as well as staff within the OHS Program Delivery branch.

    The Crane/Hoist Safety Specialist is a provincial specialist who provides subject matter expertise in support of projects, issues, publications, client responses, and front-line compliance and enforcement activities related to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code. As Crane Safety Specialist, you will provide crane expertise in reviewing and interpreting the OHS Act, Regulation and Code.

    You will assist in anticipating, identifying, and assessing crane/hoist related hazards and recommend control measures in all types of provincially regulated workplaces. You will also support OHS investigations in responding to reportable incidents by providing subject matter expertise and provide advice and technical analysis of issues to the Ministry and stakeholders in industry, labour, government, and other agencies regarding a variety of equipment hazards.

    As a subject matter expert, you will be required to use your specialized knowledge to support the development of legislative provisions and support OHS
    in the response to serious incidents and fatalities related to crane and hoisting incidents including; providing interpretations and opinions, preparing subject matter expert reports and appearing if required in legal proceedings as an expert witness.

    Your role is both critical to delivery of front-line services (enforcement of the OHS legislation, investigation of incidents) as well as government operations and priorities.

    Qualifications

    College Diploma (2 years) in a related field plus 6 years progressively responsible related experience as Journeyperson Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator, Red Seal; OR Related degree and 4 years related experience.

    The position requires the following knowledge, skills, experience and certification:
    • Recognized Alberta Crane and Hoist Equipment Operator, preferably with Interprovincial Red Seal equivalent
    • Must have proven experience with boom trucks, mobile cranes, tower cranes, gantry cranes, hoists, winching and boom trucks.
    • Knowledgeable in occupational health and safety and safety requirements related to crane/hoist operation, maintenance and rigging.
    • Capable of interpreting inspection reports and identifying areas where inspections are inadequate.
    • Knowledgeable in various crane and hoisting operations, industry standards, and safety regulations
    • Ability to calculate load capacities and determine the appropriate hoisting equipment and techniques.
    • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills
    • Able to understand, communicate in, read, and write English
    • Knowledge and ability to coordinate input and expertise from other divisions, departments, professionals as well as stakeholders on occupational health and safety issues, standards and policies.
    Assets:
    • Experience and/or knowledge of standards applicable to crane safety including but not limited to ASME B30.21, B30.16, Can/CSA Z256-M8, Z150-20, Z , B167, Z
    • Experience with Crane related incident investigations
    • Certification or experience in crane inspections including non-destructive testing of structural components, wire rope inspections, weld inspections preferred.
    • Able to locate, diagnose malfunctions in various types of cranes/hoists.

    This is a full-time position working 36.25 hours per week. Working location is in Edmonton, Calgary or Red Deer.
