Laboratory Analyst - Animal DNA Lab

As a Laboratory Analyst, your main responsibilities are to:

Performs all procedures related to DNA analysis specifically sampling, DNA extraction, DNA amplification, and electrophoresis in order to generate genotypes (STR DNA profiles) suitable for interpretation.


  • Proficiency in the main Laboratory Analyst duties is mandatory

These duties include:
sample preparation, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, electrophoresis and sample storage. Operation and maintenance of all necessary equipment to complete tasks (PC computers, pipettes, thermal cyclers, automated sequencers, heat blocks, etc.)

  • Assist with QA / QC to ensure that the laboratory is compliant with ISO 17025 guidelines.
  • Ensure that all samples meet client specified TAT.
  • Document all known sample deviations and / or process deviations and report this documentation to the Supervisor.
  • Prepare standards / reagents.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly duties according to the Analyst duty schedule.
  • Ensure adequate reagents and laboratory supplies are available by monitoring inventory and submitting purchasing requests.
  • Review and recommend revisions of SOPs, WIs and forms.
  • Assist in training of staff.
  • Participate, as required, in the development / validation of new procedures and / or instrumentation.
  • Contribute to quality, process and cost improvement initiatives in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Assess and correct problems with all registry related laboratory operations according to SOP and WI guidelines and ISO 17025 regulation criteria. Report problems and corrections to the Supervisor.
  • Monitor the laboratory areas in order to improved quality, efficiencies, and reduce costs in a continuous and ongoing fashion. Communicate these with the Supervisor.
  • Evaluate and initiate problem solving in all areas of the laboratory. Complacency and / or failure to report items of interest to the Supervisor will result in reprimand.
  • Errors may have considerable external cost and credibility implications. Oversights may result in failure to meet turnaround times or possible loss of a client or company reputation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You are the ideal Laboratory Analyst, if you have a:

  • A Biological Technician Diploma (or similar technical course related to the area of lab analysis) from an approved College.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience with all DNA analytical procedures (eg. PCR set up) and instrumentation (thermal cyclers, capillary electrophoresis) and the accompanying software programs (Data Collection).
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols.
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices in order to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem solving, detail oriented and organized.
  • Coordinates and communicates well with others in Animal DNA Department to achieve above duties.
  • Requirement to be flexible to accommodate changing priorities.
  • Independent worker for routine procedures following established SOPs and WIs but knows when to seek assistance on nonroutine analyses from supervisor, other staff or external contacts. Will participate in finding solution to any problems encountered.
