Position Overview


The Manager, Occupational Health & Safety will lead and oversee a team in the proactive development, administration and evaluation of the Occupational Health & Safety Program.

With a focus on safety, the manager will ensure a healthy and safe work environment for all staff, credentialed clinicians, volunteers, students, contractors and other stakeholders in compliance with health and safety regulations and legislation.

As Manager, you will champion workplace safety, disability case management and occupational health clinic programs and initiatives, you will provide leadership and coaching to the team, work proactively and collaboratively to resolve health and safety matters.


Additionally, the Manager will serve as the key liaison with the Ministry of Labour Training and Skills Development (MOLTSD), develop, maintain and report on departmental metrics, oversee OHS programs and actively educate managers and staff regarding processes, policies and legislative requirements to promote a culture of organizational safety and accountability.

You will support and participate on committees such as Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee and represent MGH on TAHSN Committees as required.

The Manager will perform all duties in accordance with the mission and values of Michael Garron Hospital and will continue to establish the Hospital as an industry leader in Occupational Health & Safety.


Education

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Occupational Health & Safety (or related discipline) is required.
  • Professional designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years of proven, progressive leadership within an Occupational Health & Safety field required
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of Health & Safety programs is required
  • Working knowledge of all relevant legislation such as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and associated regulations and standards, including WHMIS, NIOSH and the Ontario Human Rights Code is required
  • Demonstrated experience in a unionized hospital environment is preferred
  • Experience leading the WSIB Health & Safety Excellence program an asset
  • Strong Leadership skills required; strategic and pragmatic thinker with the ability to develop and maintain partnerships with multiple diverse stakeholders is essential
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking, decision making, problem solving and priority setting, comfortable with ambiguity is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to identify issues, plan improvements and measure success is required
  • Demonstrated ability to influence positive outcomes and provide "winwin" scenarios; possessing expert negotiation and persuasion skills is required.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to collect, interpret and analyze data to identify trends is required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with 3rd parties (Legal, WSIB, Insurers etc.) is required
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a customer focused approach to service delivery is required
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully relate to and engage staff of all levels is essential
  • Authentic and dynamic communication skills (oral/written/presentation) with the ability to mediate and manage conflict is required
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and organizational skills required
  • Excellent computer skills; demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Products is required (experience with Parklane and RL Solutions software is an asset)
  • Ability to manage budgetary responsibilities and a strong understanding of the financial aspects of claims management required
  • Demonstrated flexibility in relation to working schedule to meet operational demand is required
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development preferred
  • Good work and attendance record required
