Building a community of hope since 1987, we would like to invite you to join our journey. Siloam Mission is currently seeking a permanent weekend's Drop-In/Shelter Support Staff.


As part of a team the Support Staff are responsible to provide professional and proactive support to community members who access the Siloam Mission's Drop-In and Shelter services.

Support Staff must have a desire to work towards Siloam Mission's strategic goal of ending homelessness. This is a weekend split shift beginning in the Drop-In and transitioning to the Shelter to assist with intake.


POSITION DUTIES

  • Provide direct support for community members accessing Siloam Mission's Drop-In and Shelter services (i.e. meals, entrance, cleaning lockers, shelter intake, volunteer cleanups, etc.) in a professional manner;
  • Provide professional, compassionate daily feedback and address any behavioural concerns with community members;
  • Prepare and complete incident reports, daily logs and other required documents and reports;
  • Provide daytoday guidance and resources to community member's working on a housing plan;
  • Respond to emergency situations that occur at the assigned workplace;
  • Provide professional and informative orientation of the Drop-In to Volunteers;
  • Ensure volunteers, staff and other stakeholders are treated with equality, respect, and dignity and support them to have a positive experience while at Siloam Mission;
  • Support the team in the daily cleanup;
  • Labelling the locker contents of guests who didn't return and moving it into storage for pickup.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of diploma or degree in Health Services or Social Service discipline or equivalent years of experience;
  • Knowledge and awareness of the Indigenous culture and cultural diversity;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NVCI, ASIST, CPR/First Aid, Mental Health First Aid training (MHFA) is preferred;
  • Knowledge of community resources for homelessness, health, mental health and substance use;
  • Experience in Non-Profit sector is an asset.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/BEHAVIOURS

  • Ability to work with diverse communities and promote cultural sensitivity in the workplace;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique issues and barriers affecting those experiencing poverty and homelessness;
  • Ability to work within a harm reduction framework;
  • Knowledge of Housing First Principles and housing resources;
  • Critical thinker with a strong ability to make quick decisions under stressful situations;
  • Ability to respond to threats to safety and security of staff and clients and deescalate potentially violent situations;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to form relationships with those using services;
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries;
  • MS Office and data entry skills;
  • Experience in working with HIFIS4, Housing Plus databases is an asset.

RELATIONSHIP
Works closely with Drop-In staff, Community Members, Volunteers, and various departments of Siloam Mission


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work requires standing and walking over extended periods of time;
  • May be required to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally;
  • Overtime may be offered when necessary
  • Hazardous conditions could include potential violent outburts from community members toward staff or to other community members.
