If you have an interest in working with the project teams of a large infrastructure program delivering expert financial advice, look no further Financial Services is looking for a Senior Accountant to join a vibrant and fast paced work environment.

The LRT Expansion and Renewal Branch manages a large interdisciplinary team including design engineers, construction managers, contractors, consultants and internal City of Edmonton staff.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Senior Accountant will represent the Financial Services Branch by being embedded within the project management teams of the LRT Expansion and Renewal Branch.

You will be supporting the LRT Expansion and Renewal Branch where you will be leading or be involved in a variety of financial functions such as reporting, budgeting, forecasting, funding analysis and project monitoring to ensure there is proper financial oversight for projects in the branch.

Coordinate the gathering and collection of financial data related to individual projects
Use professional judgment to review and assess financial data related to projects to ensure reasonability
Oversee the creation of reporting on project costs including ensuring the reconciliation of the reports to the underlying financial data
Prepare for Finance Manager review month-end, quarter-end or year-end adjustments to post to SAP for complex LRT projects
Assist CAR with the performance of the close process for individual projects ensuring that financial reporting reflects the status of the projects to date
Prepare individual project reports for distribution to business areas and project managers responsible for the projects
Provide financial advice and support to client operations in creating work plans associated with the 10 year Capital Investment Outlook, including interpreting instructions, providing financial advice, highlighting areas of concern and helping analyze Information
Interpret analyzed data for proposed capital profiles developed as part of the ten (10) and four (4) year Capital Budget cycle, Reviews are conducted for reasonableness and completeness, ensuring that funding options are considered
Monitor performance of capital projects to proactively identify any potential funding or budget issues
Provide recommendations and interpretation of analysis for business case and council reports as required
Perform financial modeling to determine cash flow requirements of projects under assigned portfolio
Manage and monitor activities associated with multiple complex contracts involving collaborating with large project teams comprised of City staff across multiple departments and multiple consultants
Monitor, track and manage project cash-flows
A professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA) is required
Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible related accounting experience preferably within the public sector environment; in business case development and financial analytIcs, including capital financial planning and budgeting as associated
Thorough understanding of accounting and the preparation of complex financial statements
Strong knowledge on the Municipal Government Act, in particular the sections governing debt, and guidelines and procedures as it relates to the management of corporate debt
A strong understanding of acceptable business practices, internal controls and policies within a large corporate environment
Thorough knowledge of corporate and departmental policies and procedures
Strong understanding of general accounting activities (budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, year-end activities, financial statement preparation)
Understanding of public sector accounting standards (PSAS) as directed by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada Public Sector Handbook is considered an asset
Technical proficiency in major financial systems such as SAP and advanced Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets skills is required, in addition to proficiency using Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite
Excellent communication skills both written and oral with the ability to communicate effectively both within finance and to staff without a financial background
