    Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Sexual Health (up to 2 Casual positions)

    The Middlesex-London Health Unit has an exciting opportunity for up to 2 Casual Registered Practical Nurses to work on the Sexual Health team within the Environmental Health and Infectious Diseases (EHID) division at the Citi Plaza location, London Ontario.

    This role will work in the Birth Control Clinic and the Needle Exchange Clinic. Generally, Casual RPNs will be scheduled for 2 to 3 shifts weekly on Monday afternoons, Wednesdays 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and/or Thursdays 4:30 to 7:30 PM.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Manager, Sexual Health, the

    incumbent will:

    • Provide direct client care, including nursing assessments, treatment, education, counselling, consultation, referral, and advocacy;
    • Responsible for providing harm reduction health teaching, STI teaching, connecting clients to community services, and ordering supplies.
    • Provide training and naloxone kits to clients.
    • Build trusting nurse-client therapeutic relationships and create a safe space for clients to share personal and sensitive information.
    • Assess prescriptions to dispense and sell contraception to clients under medical directive
    • Use a variety of health communication, education, and skill-building strategies, to enhance access to sexual health services and promote optimal sexual health;
    • Provide programs and services aimed at reducing sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancies, substance abuse, and sexual assaults;
    • Maintain related records, documentation and statistics; and,
    • Prepare reports as required, and in accordance with established standards and procedures using electronic medical records.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Registered Practical Nurse diploma from an accredited nursing program (RPN).
    • Current certificate of competence from the Ontario College of Nurses.
    • Preference will be given to those with experience working within a sexual health clinical setting;
    • Flexible work hours are required (including Monday to Thursday evenings from 4:00 pm until 8:30 pm);
    • Knowledge and experience in harm reduction, sexual health, sexually transmitted infections, and birth control, from both a clinical and health promotion perspective is strongly preferred;
    • Preference will be given to those with experience and demonstrated ability to work with designated/marginalized/vulnerable clients engaged in at-risk behavior and in culturally diverse populations and with knowledge of health and social inequities;
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and families, health care staff and community partners;
    • De-escalation and conflict resolution skills an asset;
    • Motivational Interviewing skills an asset;
    • Phlebotomy skills an asset;
    • Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication & presentation skills;
    • Proficient technical skills in the areas of documentation, Microsoft Office & Electronic Medical Records software;
    • The ability to communicate (oral and written) in French and/or any other language(s) is highly desirable.

    The hourly rate for this position ranges from $30.92 to $40.00 based on qualifications and experience.
