CHILD AND YOUTH COORDINATOR

12 MONTH TERM, FULL-TIME POSITION

CLASSIFICATION/WAGE RANGE*:


  • FCDC2 $ $25.23 PER HOUR**Reporting to the Supervisor
  • Programs and Services, the Child and Youth Coordinator will provide outreach and support to youth who are under supported, vulnerable, marginalized and living within the communities we serve. The Child and Youth Coordinator functions as part of a team with Family and Community Development Coordinators, in partnership with community members, to operate the Resource Centre and provide community development and outreach with the goal of enhancing health, safety, social and economic capacity building in the community.


The responsibilities of this position include working with children and youth on an individual or group basis, the Child and Youth Coordinator will provide motivation, encouragement and support to help them develop skills to make positive changes in their lives.

This may include advocacy, intervention, risk assessments, and referrals to other professional services when the issues are complex.

Additionally, the Child and Youth Coordinator will lead planning and facilitation of skill-based and emotional development programs with the goal of increasing knowledge and skills around mental, physical and social health.

This will also include incorporating family programming into the overall support to children and youth.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and maintain program standards, plan, coordinate and run a variety of traumainformed child/youth programs that engage children and youth. Assist participants in developing new skills, increase confidence, and resiliency.
  • Provide highquality and age appropriate educational and recreational opportunities for children and youth.
  • Engage community members to participate in the Youth Advisory Group. Ensure meetings occur regularly; advise and support the community advisory committee.
  • Developing, leading and supervising Summer Day Camp Program. Including evaluation of the staff and program, providing feedback to the summer camp staff and committee.
  • Perform crisis support and longerterm follow through via dropin requests (e.g. addictions, mental health, family violence, food security, etc). This is accomplished through listening, demonstrating understanding, providing referrals and resource information to assist participants.
  • Perform outreach to children and youth, including outside organizations; Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, networks and service providers who work with the client population to promote relevant health promotion/harm reduction education, awareness and linkages to support services.
  • Advocate for and mediate between residents (children and/or their parents), between agencies on behalf of/with client, between medical/mental health professionals and clients and between school and parents.
  • Volunteer recruitment, scheduling, training, observation and mentoring; provide leadership, management of performance and support to Youth Helpers. Supervise, evaluate and direct their volunteer work; providing mentoring and emotional support.
  • Attend, chair and provide general leadership to various committees, working groups and meetings as needed.
  • Take part in the daily activities and events of the Resource Centre; Including ensuring the Centre is properly maintained; shopping for supplies, negotiating discounts; setting up, cooking and clean up.
  • Perform administrative duties including maintaining the Momentum database, create and distribute newsletters and flyers; create monthly activity reports; prepare/maintain monthly financial reports, etc.


Other duties as related to the position and as reasonably assigned by the supervisor, or as circumstances dictate, all within the context of Family Dynamics' Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles as well as a strong and progressive customer service and child community service orientation.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline is preferred; diploma in Human Services discipline; Community Development diploma.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification is an asset
  • Food Handlers Certificate is an asset
  • Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and/or Deescalating Potentially Violent Situations.
  • Program planning and implementing for children and/or youth, preferably in a nonprofit/social services setting.
  • A minimum of five years' direct experience working with children and youth is required
  • A minimum of two years' direct experience in community development preferred
  • A minimum of two years' experience supervising, providing leadership and evaluating the work of other is preferred
  • Experience working with marginalized, vulnerable populations required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
