Overview:
The
Construction Safety Officer is a pan-business role that is pivotal to growing our safety culture and ensuring compliance across the business. The position works closely with all levels of the business to ensure structured processes are developed and integrated into our management operating system at the field level. The Construction Safety Officer needs to balance compliance, education and a practical knowledge of field work in their daily activities.
The Construction Safety Officer is integral in maintaining the capability of the GVA operations organization to increase construction revenue and capability.
Responsibilities:
Reporting and Tracking (10%)
- Monitor Site Docs (electronic safety platform) to ensure accountabilities are being completed
- Reports to concerned authorities as requested or mandated by regulations
- Provides input into development of best practices and safe work procedures
- Provides analysis of safety trends to enable process improvement
- Provides site presence to assist in managing medical incidents
- Provides a leading role into post incident investigations
- Ensures post incident communication (best practices, lessons learnt) are deployed
- Provides the business point of contact to the safety department for employee claims management
Contractor Safety Management:
Lafarge Contractor Coordinator (LCC) (40%)
- Attend Pre-Job Meetings (as necessary)
- Ensure WCAN General Orientations are delivered (as required)
- Ensure Site Specific Orientations are delivered
- Maintain communications with the Contractor
- Undertake Contractor Observations
- Undertake Contractor Inspections
- Conduct Post-Job Evaluations
- Plays a lead role in reporting and investigating incidents (as required)
- Act as a liaison between the Contractor and our employees and management
- Perform site visits on a daily basis at both construction sites and fixed plant locations.
- Works with all stakeholders to integrate and improve the safety management operating system
- Ensure strict compliance with all health and safety rules and country regulations
- Work with front line employees to build greater awareness of policies and procedures
- Works with all stakeholders to ensure a hazardfree environment.
- Supports the effective delivery of toolbox talks, hazard assessments and safety training
- Presents regular/monthly safety meetings.
Dimensions:
- Relationships: Interacting with project managers, superintendents, foremen, employees, subcontractors and other sub trades
Qualifications:
- Education: _
- CSO (Construction Safety Officer) or NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation required
- A combination of 35 years relevant work experience
- OFA Level 2 Required, OFA Level 3 an asset
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) not required but an asset
- Experience and
Skill Set:

- Ability to articulate processes, investigation findings and educational material across all levels of the business
- Good field experience in the construction sector
- Working knowledge of claims management and post incident management
- Great problem solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and great organization skills
- Experience in Heavy Civil Construction, and Road Work industry preferred
- Capable of multitasking and managing priorities
- High capacity of working under pressure and stress
