    Program Director - British Columbia, Canada - Kootenay Career Development Society

    Default job background
    Description

    About YCCBC:

    Youth Climate Corps British Columbia (YCCBC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth to lead the way in climate action. Our programs focus on local food security, wildfire mitigation, energy efficiency, youth leadership development, ecological restoration, community engagement, climate education, and other key environmental initiatives. We aim to create sustainable and well-paid career opportunities for young people while actively combating climate change.

    Position Overview:

    YCCBC is seeking a dynamic and experienced Program Director to lead the development and implementation of Youth Climate Corps programs across British Columbia. The Program Director will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the programs, managing staff, coordinating with community partners, and ensuring the successful delivery of our projects. The ideal candidate will have a passion for climate action and youth empowerment, as well as strong leadership and organizational skills.

    The role of the Program Director (PD) is to lead and facilitate the creation of onsite programs for accomplishing YCCBC's mission. The PD leads and supports projects that contribute to climate resilience in communities across BC.

    The PD collaborates with local partners and organizations to deliver YCCBC programming. The PD develops and ensures training and implementation of risk management, education, and workplace policies.

    Part of a co-leadership team where the Directors of Marketing/Communications, Operations/Finance and this position work together in collaboration with the Executive Director. All Directors work with the board but ultimately report to the Executive Director.

    Responsibilities:

    Leadership

    • Work as a part of the leadership team with the Directors of Marketing/Communications, Operations/Finance and Executive Director to build and support a growing organization;
    • Contribute skills to support the strategic growth of the organization in support of its mission.

    Program Development

    • Design and support programs throughout the province based on an existing model;
    • Develop and oversee the implementation of the YCCBC programs, including project planning, budgeting, and reporting;
    • Work with the Director of Operations/Finance and community leaders to manage program budgets;
    • Support the Program Managers and Coordinators of each region for program delivery;
    • Ensure program staff have the tools and equipment they need to deliver programs, with the support of the Director of Operations/Finance;
    • Ensure a safe working environment for all participants, adhering to employment, WorkSafeBC and other relevant standards and regulations;
    • Support the development of "next step" program integration for participants who completed the program with the Communications & Marketing Director;
    • Monitor and evaluate program outcomes, reporting on progress to YCCBC leadership and funders by maintaining program data and metrics, as well as qualitative feedback for reporting needs;
    • Ensure effective representation of programs in collaboration with the Communications & Marketing Director.
    • Gather program feedback, and implement program evaluation in pursuit of ongoing improvement;
    • Oversee and support program report writing and development.

    Human Resourcefulness

    • In collaboration with the YCCBC staff, recruit, train, and supervise YCCBC Hubs/Crew;
    • Develop and support a strong culture among program staff and participants that reflects YCCBC's values;
    • Understanding of employment law and standards as needed to support programs.

    Partnerships

    • Represent and maintain YCCBC relationships in the community, promoting YCCBC programs and building relationships with key stakeholders;
    • Identify funding opportunities in the communities where programs run and in prospective communities, working with the leadership team to secure that funding;
    • Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to identify and develop Youth Climate Corps Programs in British Columbia;
    • Work with the Director of Operations/Finance on reporting requirements to program/grant partners.

    Qualifications:

    • 5+ years of experience in program development, human resources, education or organizational development, with a focus on managing teams and organizational culture, preferably within the non-profit sector;
    • YCCBC values individual experiences and recognizes that qualifications can be gained through a variety of paths, including lived experience, work experience, and formal education. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply, and we will consider equivalent experience in career history alongside formal education when evaluating candidates' qualifications for the role.
    • Experience or training in outdoor education, whether through lived experience or a formal program would be an asset to this role.
    • Strong project management skills;
    • Strong facilitation and conflict resolution skills;
    • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire others;
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders;
    • Knowledge of climate change issues and a commitment to environmental sustainability;
    • Experienced educator, specifically with young adults;
    • Experience working with BIPOC youth and communities;
    • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects based on priority;
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative, with a proactive and problem-solving attitude.

    Values

    YCCBC decisions are informed by these core values:

    Youth leadership: While older people have important contributions to make, solutions to the climate crisis must be shaped by those who will live the outcomes. We ensure youth perspectives are at the decision making table.
    Community focus: We are a national initiative that operates at the local level through projects identified as community priorities by local residents and leaders.
    Inclusion and connection: We understand climate change as deeply related to justice and oppression, so we strive to design programming to specifically address systemic issues, amplifying the leadership of marginalized people, and supporting Indigenous sovereignty leadership, as well as internally ensuring our workplace to be a safe and justice-seeking space.
    Innovative problem solving: We strive to make unique contributions to the Canadian climate movement and to local communities by tackling work that is important, but neglected, or facing barriers.
    Grounding in ecology and climate science: Our initiatives are guided by the best current science and strive to preserve and enhance the resilience and health of natural ecosystems alongside human needs.
