Maintenance/Gardening Worker

Eminidowang Kitigaan - Spirit Garden for Everyone

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: 2 positions -Kitchener Location, 16 WEEK Summer Placement**Are you looking for ways to get involved in Reconciliation work? Anishnabeg Outreach was donated a 10-acre plot of farmland where we grow ancient Indigenous squash, pumpkins, traditional medicines, and various produce to support over 380 Indigenous families in the Kitchener Waterloo Region


Anishnabeg Outreach is looking for highly energetic and motivated individuals to join our team for the summer and support our Eminidowang Kitigaan - Spirit Garden for Everyone We're looking for a dynamic Maintenance/Garden Worker to assume a vital role in fostering the success of the Spirit Bundle Food Program through crop cultivation on designated farming days, while also taking charge of maintaining the indoor and outdoor spaces at our community center during non-farming days.

This multifaceted role serves to provide the Indigenous community with a secure, hygienic, and inviting setting by overseeing various maintenance duties.

This encompasses a comprehensive range of responsibilities, such as maintaining cleanliness standards, managing waste disposal, tending to lawns, and nurturing gardens, all aimed at cultivating an inclusive and inviting ambiance.


HOURS/WEEK: 37.5 hours per week Monday-Friday 8am-4pm***Anishnabeg Outreach is a large and rapidly expanding Indigenous non-profit and registered charity organization. We are dedicated to the enrichment of the Indigenous community through the development of many partnerships. Through our work, we foster belonging and spirit building, and dedicate ourselves each day to building a healthy and vibrant Indigenous community.

To assist First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) by creating a sustainable and comprehensive suite of centralized wrap around services for urban FNMI and to establish Anishnabeg Outreach as an innovative hub/heart of best practices for economic development, training and employment on reserves.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
These positions are funded by the Canada Summer Jobs fund.

To be considered for this job you must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Basic knowledge of sustainable farming practices and basic landscaping/gardening skills considered an asset.
  • Ability to perform cleaning tasks efficiently and operate and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Respectful and culturally sensitive approach towards indigenous traditions and knowledge.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Selfmotivated, adaptable, and capable of working independently.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Professional and strong ability to establish working relationships/partnerships.
  • Agrees with the objectives and philosophy of Anishnabeg Outreach and displays a caring, respectful attitude toward the families and team members.
  • Experience in agricultural work, gardening, facility maintenance, or janitorial services an asset.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES

  • Crop Cultivation Support: Assist in planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting crops on the 10acre farm dedicated to the Spirit Bundle Food Program. Follow sustainable and organic farming practices to ensure healthy crop growth during scheduled farming days.
  • Indoor Facility Maintenance: Perform regular cleaning duties within the community center to maintain cleanliness and organization. Sweep, mop, sanitize, and ensure waste disposal as needed.
  • Outdoor Facility Maintenance: Take care of outdoor areas by cutting grass, maintaining lawns, and tending to garden beds. Water plants and gardens on nonfarming days to ensure their health and vitality.
  • Equipment and Tools: Maintain farm equipment, tools, and facility maintenance supplies in good working condition. This may involve fixing equipment, light fixtures, or addressing issues related to plumbing or electrical systems. Notify appropriate personnel for major repairs.
