    The Educational Developer – Indigenous Initiatives is an integral member of the Educational Development Team in the Centre for Teaching Excellence. The Educational Developer – Indigenous Initiatives will work directly with faculty in Indigenizing curriculum, programming, and the learning environment.

    The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) provides educational leadership that supports excellence in teaching to the university community. The CTE offers several educational development programs such as the Instructional Skills Workshop, Teaching Squares, faculty peer mentoring, communities of practices, faculty learning communities, individual consultations, curriculum design, teaching with technology, and an annual Teaching and Learning Symposium.The Educational Developer – Indigenous Initiatives is flexible, positive and works well in a collaborative team environment. The Educational Developer – Indigenous Initiatives will promote excellence and innovation in teaching and learning while carrying out the following responsibilities:

    Illustrative Examples/Specific Responsibilities

    Under the general guidance of the director, teaching and learning, and as part of the Centre for Teaching Excellence, the Educational Developer – Indigenous Initiatives is responsible to do the following:

  • Consult and advise faculty in [Indigenous] curriculum development according to evidence-informed best practices for student learning such as high impact educational practices;
  • Advise faculty in effective and innovative teaching practices through formal and informal individual and group consultations, resource creation, and workshop and institute delivery Support faculty in course development, delivery and assessment of meaningful learning experiences;
  • Consult with faculty to develop effective strategies for integrating anticolonial and Indigenous ways of knowing into curriculum at both the course and program level;
  • Facilitate workshops and consultations developed through the Centre for Teaching Excellence for faculty to enhance teaching and learning with a specific emphasis on knowledge of Indigenous history, perspectives, ways of knowing, and cultural and pedagogical practices including Land‐based learning;
  • Disseminate and promote knowledge on Indigenous teaching and learning;
  • Work with faculty on specific course-related needs (e.g., designing and using rubrics, active learning strategies, and assessment) in the context of Indigenization;
  • Develop a repository of faculty support materials such as instructional resources and website resources;
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant people and departments within the University to establish culturally appropriate practices, policies and systems;
  • Support and contribute to the work of the Aboriginal Student Success Plan;
  • Support and contribute to the work of Chen Chen Stway;
  • Liaise with university staff and faculty, including the Indigenous Education Advisor, at the kálax-ay Sunshine Coast Campus, Sechelt campus, Ts'zil Learning Centre, Squamish Campus, and Indigenous Education and Affiars to align Indigenization initiatives;
  • Work with faculty and administrators to fulfil the intent of any existing affiliation agreements and align with the TRC's Calls to Action and UNDRIP where relevant;
  • Support implementation of institutional Indigenization and decolonization initiatives;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, and presentations pertaining to Indigenous education, Indigenization, and decolonization;
  • Recognizing the importance of local knowledge, consult with Elders in each region and other knowledge holders to ensure cultural safety and guide the transmission of Indigenous knowledge at CapU;
  • Attend departmental meetings regularly and report on activities;
  • Develop and deliver cultural workshops in collaboration with other Indigenous Faculty Advisors, members of Indigenous Education and Affairs, and the Centre for Teaching Excellence;
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • What you'll bring Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Education or a related field. We also invite applicants with an equivalent combination of education, scholarship, lived experience and community engagement.
  • In alignment with a Special Program approved by the BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, the roles and responsibilities for this position entail delivery of Indigenous content and, as such, applicants who self-identify as Indigenous or having Indigenous ancestry may be given priority in the recruitment process. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify in their cover letter. Applicants are also encouraged to describe how their lived experience as an Indigenous person informs their scholarship and/or community work and to outline their experience working with Indigenous communities/students.
  • Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

  • Understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report and the UNDRIP and ability to incorporate related issues into activities and university initiatives;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience facilitating in a sensitive and cross-cultural learning environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to move forward and facilitate a project or initiative;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous administrative structures and Processes.
  • Knowledge of current research in teaching and learning, best practices, and standards of teaching excellence (active learning and strategies for student engagement), with expertise in Indigenous methodologies;
  • Demonstrated skills in teaching and educational development abilities;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technologies and design theories and practices and application of best practices in the use of technologies in teaching and learning in post-secondary education;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the use of technology as tools for achieving learning goals;
  • Experience in online and blended learning course design, development, and delivery;
  • Knowledge and expertise in Moodle, e-portfolio, video-conferencing, educational technology and assessment technologies;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively with a diverse group of faculty, administrators, and staff individually and in group settings in written and verbal communications;
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and provide workshops through campus partnerships and develop workshops as needed;
  • Demonstrated skill in facilitation and presentation workshops;
  • Knowledge of the impact of physical classroom environment on teaching and learning approaches;
  • Strong computer skills, including a high degree of facility in the use of all Microsoft Office applications, are required;
  • Demonstrated organizational and self-management skills including time management and the ability to prioritize, multi-task and attend to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage time well, and communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and staff while taking a service-oriented approach and consultative decision-making.
