The Aquatics Supervisor shares responsibility for ensuring service excellence in all Aquatic Program spaces and assists in the supervision and safe operation of these programs and spaces; ensuring the YMCA of Greater Toronto regulations, National YMCA standards, Provincial Standards (health regulation 565) and SAM expectations are met.


They also provide direct leadership to programs and services that include: Child, Youth and Adult YMCA Learn to Swim Program, Youth Leadership and Adult programming.

The position supervises Aquatic Lifeguards/Instructors, conducting new staff orientations, and helps to organize and facilitate staff trainings.


In this role, you will:


  • Provide leadership to all Aquatics areas, including the YMCA Swim Program and Junior Lifeguard Program. Provides quality service to members.
  • Responsible for recruiting, training and coaching YMCA staff and volunteers related to the delivery of Aquatics, including coaching, development and evaluation of staff and volunteers related to the delivery of Aquatic and Conditioning programs.
  • Monitor the safety of all activities and programs and responds immediately to rectify any safety concerns.
  • Conduct audits to ensure compliance with YMCA standards.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor membership service in the specific service areas assigned to current SAM and EYE standards; consistently applies the standards and protocols of YMCA.
  • Act as the Pool Operator as outlined in the Ontario Health Regulations 56
  • Give leadership to AED, First Aid and CPR, including training staff, volunteers and participants.
  • Ensure the safety of all members, property and staff by following established Workplace Health & Safety practices and procedures and being responsible for the Stocking and Ordering of First-Aid Supplies.
  • Support the staff team in the role of Service Leader, always representing the West End YMCA Centre and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Understands and supports YMCA philanthropic commitments, connects with families and offers opportunities to give, either financially or their personal time, including participation in special events within the centre and the community.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You bring:


  • Degree or Diploma in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation Leadership or related field preferred
  • Recommended minimum 2 years instructing and supervisory experience
  • National Lifeguarding Service Award
  • Other Recognized Swim Instructor Qualification (Red Cross, LSS)
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications
  • YMCA Swim Instructors Certification an Asset
  • Aquatic Supervisory Training an Asset
  • Instructor / Examiner qualifications an Asset
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, evenings and weekends.
