Description

The Visual Arts Instructor II's work within a team environment to develop and implement creative, age-appropriate programs for Strathcona County in the areas of pottery, fused glass, painting, drawing, fibre arts, sewing, paper crafts, contemporary art interpretation, and games.


  • Community programs scheduled from Monday
  • Sunday from 4:00 pm 9:00 pm (child/ youth/ adult)
  • Group programming occurring on weekend mornings and afternoons from 9:00 am 4:00pm and weekday evenings from 4:00 pm 9:00 pm (example, Brownies, Girl guides, birthday parties)
  • Summer and other seasonal camps occur Monday
  • Friday 8:00 am 5:00 pm

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a range of visual arts programs, classes, camps and workshops to a wide variety of audiences within an inclusive, positive, safe, and creative learning environment
  • Plan, develop and deliver activities that incorporate a variety of artforms and mediums, including but not limited to, drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fibre art, glass fusing, art history and contemporary art theory
  • Consider skill development and progression, arts education approaches to maximise participant learning, appreciation, and engagement
  • For children and youth, incorporate the interests of the children and supporting children's emotional, artistic, and social development, creativity, and fundamental movement and fine motor skill progression.
  • For school groups, understand curriculum connections and teacher objectives and desired outcomes to support educational success.
  • Prepare materials for each program.
  • Create and refine project samples for each program in advance for use as teaching tools during class instruction
  • Ensure program spaces are clean and safe and that materials and equipment are used in accordance with County OHS guidelines.
  • Provide excellent guest service for program participants and community
  • Collaborate and positively interact within a team environment
  • Manage forms, documents and communications with class participants at the time of the class
  • Communicate any questions, issues or concerns to the Recreation Programmer
  • Assist with program documentation and administration and site preparation
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in visual art programs and ensure health and safety regulations are followed
  • Lead role in coordinating and delivering seasonal camp programs and activities

Qualifications

  • Completed one to two years of postsecondary education in visual arts, education and/or other related degree or equivalent experience
  • Two years of work experience instructing art programs to a variety of ages in group settings is highly desired
  • Demonstrated experience working with children
  • Strathcona County's Leaders in Training program is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience or skills with some or all of the following art media: Art fundamentals; painting media, drawing media, art and design
Contemporary art knowledge and interpretation skills in a gallery or museum environment
Cultural Arts and heritage crafts
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, art, and history
Experience interpreting curriculum-connected arts programming
Ceramic arts; pottery techniques, hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface decoration
Glass fusing, slumped forms, familiarity with glass studio tools and operation
Fibre arts, têxtiles and sewing
Multidisciplinary art skills are considered an asset


Conditions of Employment

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification
  • Ability to lift 20lbs. and supply totes as part of the job duties and stand for extended periods of time
Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered.

$24.23-$30.30 per hour
