Your role
Are you passionate about breaking news, enterprise storytelling and digital journalism, and have a keen interest in uncovering issues that matter to your audience?


CBC Thunder Bay is looking for an experienced, dynamic and creative digital and broadcast journalist who can make a positive contribution to our newsroom and to our audience.


An exceptional journalist and a self-starter, you must be able to analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom.

You have experience in a newsroom and have already broken a few stories that you're proud of.

You are interested in seeking new voices for your stories, particularly those who have been left out of the conversation.

You know how to write, edit, and package broadcast and digital news and current affairs content.

You know the ins and outs of social media, and you are comfortable chasing your own stories as well as writing them based on material gathered by your colleagues.

You're innovative and will try new things.

You are comfortable living on the cutting edge with new workflows and new story treatments using audio, text and video.

You inspire others to do the same.

You understand the diverse and changing population in northwestern Ontario, and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

You have demonstrated experience reporting in Indigenous communities.


In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

Key Tasks:


  • Pitch, source, research, factcheck and write short and longform enterprise stories with an understanding of alternative digital and broadcast storytelling formats that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Respond quickly to report on breaking news events as they unfold on all platforms. (digital, social, radio & video).
  • Repurpose content from other CBC platforms, including writing, packaging stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio and graphics using the latest information and audience metrics.
  • Copy edit and publish digital content from other writers.
  • Write and voice clear, concise and critical stories for radio; and deliver a newscast in a live environment.
  • Conduct analysis of facts and information gathered and draw conclusions or raise issues requiring further investigation.
  • Prepare, write and deliver scripts, stories and packaged radio items, including live treatments in morning and afternoon radio programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
  • Strong understanding of broadcast and online news, including social media and methods of online content distribution.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.
  • Knowledge of standard design software including Adobe Photoshop, Excel, Datawrapper, Mapbox, QGIS and ArcGIS is preferred. Frontend web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a bonus.
  • Knowledge of standard broadcast technologies, including fieldgathering equipment and studio boards is preferred.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario, with a demonstrated knowledge of reporting in First Nations.
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
  • Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for learning new tools and journalism forms and an interest in shaping them for the future.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
