    Duties

    1. Acts as the engineering/design authority on specialized projects or systems related to Critical Minerals R&D, including:
    a. Determines the requirements of proposed systems,
    b. Determines the acceptability of design modifications, materials and work methods, and
    c. Determines approaches to resolve problems and meet project objectives.
    2. Advises clients on their proposals, discusses design issues and specifications with NRCan management, with contractors and consulting engineers, and with other departments, universities, industry and private organizations within and outside Canada, if applicable.
    3. Interacts with industry, research and development organizations to maintain an awareness of emerging engineering issues related to Critical Minerals R&D; also interacts with other departments and contracting firms involved in joint projects.
    4. Evaluates research, development and demonstration project proposals related to Critical Minerals R&D to determine technical feasibility, technology readiness level, environmental performance, and strategic impact.
    5. Develops and conducts techno-economic analyses of novel technologies and processes related to Critical Minerals R&D.

    NRCan has transitioned to a hybrid work environment which offers employees the opportunity to telework and work from the designated work location, subject to operational requirements. This position will require an in-office presence for a minimum of three (3) days a week.

    Intent of the process

    The intent of this selection process is to staff one full-time indeterminate position.

    A pool of qualified candidates will be created as a result of this process to staff future vacancies.

    Information you must provide In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

    EDUCATION:
    Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mineral processing engineering, mining engineering, materials engineering or geological engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • A minimum of five years of recent (within the last ten years) professional experience in mineral processing

    • Within the last three years, experience liaising with industry, academia or other relevant organizations for the purpose of maintaining an awareness of emerging engineering issues related to critical minerals processing

    • Recent experience (within the last ten years) in delivering bench or pilot scale experiments, in the field of critical minerals processing

    • Experience in reporting on scientific research projects, as applied to processing of critical minerals

    • Experience in evaluating research and development proposals relevant to the duties of the position

    ASSET CRITERIA:
    - Master's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position.

    Experience conducting techno-economic analyses in a field related to the duties of the position.

    OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
    - Willingness and ability to travel;
    - Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and overtime, on occasion

    KNOWLEDGE:

    • Knowledge of Canada's critical minerals strategy and mineral processing challenges inhibiting development of a critical minerals industry in Canada

    • Knowledge of how to plan and lead applied research and development projects to develop new applications of engineering knowledge related to critical minerals

    • Knowledge of mineral processing

    • Knowledge of the importance of techno-economic analysis in mineral processing

    ABILITIES:

    • Communicate effectively in writing

    • Communicate effectively orally

    • Work under minimal supervision to meet project objectives

    • Ability to conduct a techno-economic analysis

    • Ability to create science policy plain language summaries relevant to the duties of the position
