Position purpose:


Under the direction of the Assistant Director High Performance, the Head Coach / Program Manager (CPM) of a U SPORTS program is fully responsible for coaching and long-term program development.

The CPM will manage the program with resources provided by the Service which support the essential components of the program to ensure the academic and athletic progression and success of the student-athletes and is responsible for the introduction, education, delivery and evaluation of the sport specific program.

The CPM will also be actively involved in assisting the Service in building community support to fundraise for program resources that will enhance the student-athlete experience and build alumni relations as well as community outreach program that will reflect positively on the University's presence locally.


In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Coaching (60%). In coaching the team, be responsible for creating an environment which is consistent with the values of the University of Ottawa and will foster the development of the student-athletes in the program toward conference and U SPORTS success and recognition.


Primarily these duties are:

  • Plan, prepare, implement and evaluate the annual competitive objectives, training cycles schedule of practice sessions and competitions events within the context of a fully developed yearly training plan.
  • Select, direct, supervise, and evaluate the assistant coach and support staff.
  • Lead annual schedule of required team meetings for all ancillary sport program services, academic monitoring and player evaluations.
  • Design, develop, implement and evaluate a recruitment strategy to respond to the needs of the eligibility cycle and to maximize performance.
  • In coordination with the head athletic therapist, be responsible for the supervision of all studentathletes and student therapy staff.
  • Develop, with the assistance of the technical coaching staff, tools to realize the achievement of the program objectives to include annual training and practice plans, game wining style of play and supporting tactical systems, game analysis and performance metrics tools

Program Management (30%). The CPM is responsible for year-round leadership and operational implementation for the long-term stability, development and success of the U SPORTS program.

  • Develop, implement and evaluate the program's longterm sport development and strategic plan on the basis of a Sport Gap analysis.
  • Complete a yearly evaluation of the team's training plan, performance and operational plan.
  • Attend all sportspecific conference (OUA and QRSEQ) and national (U SPORTS) league meetings and conference voting protocols.
  • Prepare an annual program budget submission. Monitor the approved budget to ensure a balanced program operating budget at fiscal yearend.
  • Liaise with the Assistant Director Programs to complete the program's annual competitive schedule, establish the program's annual calendar of events, and confirm the allotted facility requirements for training, competition and special events.
  • Actively and positively participate in global administrative processes and structures within sports services.
  • Assist the Student-Athlete Services Officer to ensure that studentathlete eligibility and antidoping requirements are adhered to, as set out by the OUA, RSEQ and U SPORTS.
  • Liaise with the Student Athlete Services Officer regarding the support and guidance of studentathlete scheduling, academic performance, mentoring requirements, counseling and the allocation of Athlete Financial Awards.
  • Manage the inventory of sport equipment and acquisition needs.

Marketing, Communications and community outreach - (10%). Working in partnership with the Sports Services Communications and Marketing team, the CPM is responsible for assisting in the promotion of the U SPORTS Program to both the internal and external communities.
