The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Structural, Building Mechanical and Airport Operational Systems or the guidance of a Journeyman Tradesperson; the Trades Helper will assist with the scheduled maintenance, construction, alteration, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of building structural, mechanical, and electrical equipment systems and facilities.


Responsibilities include:

Performs schedule preventative maintenance and inspection of airport equipment, electrical systems, mechanical systems, HVAC systems and structures under the guidance of a Journeyman Tradesperson by:

  • Reviewing preventative maintenance work order cards issued and carrying out the tasks indicated.
  • Reporting malfunctions and/or problem areas on maintenance work order cards and recommending corrective action.
  • Assessing the work order and determining the tools, instruments, equipment, materials, etc required to carry out the required maintenance.
  • Inspecting equipment, systems, and structures to establish condition reports used for planning future maintenance requirements.
  • Erecting scaffolding and temporary hoarding structures
  • Coordinating work times with tenants/customers and others so as not to interrupt daily operations.
  • Total clean up of work areas and equipment upon completion of work
  • Carries out inspections on Air Terminal Building, Administration building, Powerhouse and other small buildings.
  • Estimating time and materials for all work
  • Writing detailed condition reports
  • Moving office furniture
  • Installation and removal of office partitions
  • Installation of pictures and plaques
  • Janitorial related clean up tasks in industrial areas
  • Installation of banners, posters, and event related signage
  • Coordinating work times with tenants/customers and others so as not to interrupt the daily operations.
  • Assisting other trades as required
  • Recording all work, time, and materials on a computerized maintenance management system
  • Total clean up of work areas and equipment upon completion of work
  • Deployment of proper barricades and signage to warn and protect the general public and others from the work area.
  • Selecting and estimating quantities and amounts of materials required.
  • Keeping up to date WHMIS material safety data sheets for products either working directly with or working in proximity to MSDS
  • Researching materials and availability or products for purchase action by Supervisor
  • Purchasing and pick up of materials and equipment.
  • Escorting of contractors and working with as required
  • Providing technical advice on general issues related to duties of a trades helper.
  • Estimating time and material for all work
  • Reporting all unsatisfactory or unsafe conditions to Supervisor
  • Working alone as required
  • Working shift work as and when required

Selection Criteria include:


  • Completion of Secondary School pr professional certification in a related field preferred
  • Trades school preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of construction related job experience and/or experience assisting a skilled trade person. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Familiarity with construction practices and processes
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime and standby shifts on a rotational basis for critical system maintenance.
  • Minimum class 5 driver's license, with the ability to obtain an Airport Vehicle Operator's Permit and restricted radio/telephone license.
  • Ability to prepare basic reports and use MS Office Suite

Condition of employment is the ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card.
