As a seasonal member of our Research, Development and Innovation team, you will learn how new crop varieties are developed in Western Canada and gain experience in agronomy and crop breeding as you assist with the field evaluation of experimental varieties and breeding materials. You will also gain practical experience working with farm machinery and driving a truck and trailer. Nutrien Ag Solutions offers a competitive salary with paid overtime. There is a position available for a four to six month summer term contract with some flexibility, from May 1-August 31, or April 1-October 31. The summer term contract may be extended depending on business needs.

Located in Edmonton, AB and reporting to the local Agronomist and research technicians, you will be involved with the establishment, maintenance and harvest of canola, wheat and barley research plots.

What you will do:

• Field seed bed preparations and flagging of sites
• Seed cleaning, seed treatment and set-up of seeding envelopes
• Establishing and maintaining small plot field trials
• Set up and operation of field equipment
• Operating small plot field equipment such as tractors, seeders, sprayers and tillage tools
• Driving a truck and trailer to move equipment between sites
• Application of in-crop herbicides and fungicides
• Taking accurate and precise agronomic notes
• Operating a small plot combine or swather
• Fall land preparation, including application of herbicides and fertilizer
• Equipment calibration and maintenance
• Assisting technicians, agronomists and plant breeders with other duties as required
• Some travel and out of town work may be required

What you will bring:

• Punctual, reliable and able to work outdoors
• A high level of attention to detail resulting in consistent outcomes
• Proven problem solving and critical thinking abilities in team and individual settings
• Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills
• A valid Class 5 driver's license
• Small plot field trial experience and/or agricultural or farm experience is an asset but not required
• Mechanical aptitude with farm machinery is an asset but not required
• Currently enrolled in or finished an undergraduate degree program in Agriculture or a related natural science
