We currently have
Regular Full-time opportunities for
Phlebotomy Technician in the
Odette Cancer Centre - Oncology Department at our
Bayview Campus.

Weekday:
Days; As per schedule


Summary of Duties

  • Performs venipuncture on outpatients (Odette-T1 & Breast Centre
  • M6 Specimen Collection Units) in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Performs ECGs on outpatients
  • Perform special test collections, such as clinical trials, and complete related documentation
  • Provides education to patients and team members with respect to blood collection and selfcollection specimens, e.g. 24 hour urine
  • Uses hospital information systems to access orders
  • Provides documentation review for patients requiring service
  • Prepare specimens for transportation and testing. Send specimens to the laboratory for testing using pneumatics tube system and/or ensure specimens are arranged for transport to the laboratory by porter service
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team as needed to clarify physician orders and specimen requirements
  • Provides assistance to address issues with patients, referring offices and internal departments
  • Practices in a safe manner, maintains a safe working environment and complies with IP&C practices and provides patientcentred care
  • Participates in CQI initiatives and assists in training of staff

Qualifications/Skills

  • Successful completion of a Community College program for Medical Laboratory Assistants (must include Phlebotomy)
  • OSMT certification required
  • CSMLS MLA certification an asset
  • Minimum two (2) years recent experience in venipuncture required
  • Hospital venipuncture experience an asset
  • Working knowledge of computers for requisition entry
  • Detail oriented and able to follow departmental procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or independently, as required
  • Ability to work safely and accurately, follow directives from assigned Team Leader, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance, punctuality and attendance records
  • Demonstrated good communication skills and interpersonal skills
