    Fisheries Field Supervisor at Archipelago

    Want to help look after our ocean resources? Do you think rain-soaked high-vis fashion is the next big trend? Dream of a job that combines your passion for biology, technology, leadership, and customer service? Archipelago is seeking an organized and motivated Field Supervisor to assist with the delivery of its fisheries monitoring programs in the Ucluelet area, British Columbia.

    Hours of work can be irregular with weekend and evening work required. All necessary training will be provided.
    You will be trained to provide customer service and work independently and as a team to:
    Monitor commercial fisheries landings on the dock :
    Monitor and document the offload activities of groundfish commercial fishing vessels.
    Collect biological samples important to fisheries stock management.
    Accurately record offloaded weights into electronic data systems and on paper.
    Monitor compliance of fishery regulations.
    Service electronic monitoring equipment on vessels tied up to the dock :
    Install and service electronic monitoring equipment on board commercial fish boats.
    Review sensor data of commercial fishing activity to report catch and bycatch.
    Manage operations and logistics from the office or home :
    Staff management, recruitment, hiring and training.

    Perform administrative duties to keep track of equipment, payroll and finances, ship and receive supplies and data, and maintain open communication and teamwork with coworkers in other locations.

    Serve as a point of contact concerning the field and office operations.

    The job is physically demanding, and candidates should be capable of lifting baskets of fish (40+ pounds) and climb ladders up to 25 feet to board fishing vessels.

    Interest in learning to work on electronic monitoring equipment systems and mechanical aptitude.
    High school graduate.

    Must have a valid BC Driver License (or equivalent to) with a reliable vehicle to get to job sites.

    Experience with hand tools and basic understanding of electrical circuits.
    Knowledge of the fishing industry and ability to identify commercially important species.

    Bonus points:
    post-Secondary education in a related field and/or relevant work experience.
    5 hours per week and is a full time commitment.

    Actual hours per week vary with fishing activity – there is more work in the summer and less work in the winter.

    ~ Must obtain Fisheries Observer Certification through Fisheries and Oceans, Canada*. This required certification training is provided to successful candidates in our 2-week paid training course.
    ~ All successful candidates will need to provide a criminal record check to be certified as a Fisheries Observer as required by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
    ~ At Archipelago, the health and safety of our staff, clients and communities are a priority. All offers of employment are contingent on the candidate providing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the date of hire.
    ~ Fisheries Act and Fisheries (General) Regulations state that a person who owns, operates, manages, or is an employee of an enterprise that catches, cultures, processes or transports fish cannot be certified as a Fisheries Observer.
