The Child Death Review Unit is responsible for undertaking a review of the facts and circumstances of child deaths in British Columbia for the purposes of discovering and monitoring trends in child deaths, and determining whether further evaluation of the deaths of children is necessary or desirable in the public interest.

Reviews may be conducted on an individual or aggregate basis.


The Child Death Review Coroner is an integral member of the Child Death Review Unit in ensuring the facts and circumstances of every child death are reviewed to identify risk factors and protective factors related to a child's life and death with the view to developing recommendations that could reduce those same risk factors for other children.


As a Child Death Review Coroner, you will review the facts and circumstances for all completed investigations relating to the death of a child.

The purpose of the review will be to monitor trends and identify potential risk factors.

The position reports to the Chair of the Child Death Review Unit and is expected to provide a summary of cases reviewed and to highlight significant risk factors or trends, and may make recommendations to the Chair regarding those cases which may warrant further review.


You will utilize expertise to identify systemic issues and trends related to child fatalities and liaise with Coroners Service staff and other stakeholders and partners as necessary.

You may seek out and obtain additional information to inform your review. You may be required to exercise investigative authority under section 11 of the Coroners Act.


Job Requirements:


  • A bachelor's degree in social sciences, public administration, law, medicine, or public health with 3 years of practical experience in a related field;
    OR:
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience producing a variety of documents, such as briefing materials, literature reviews and reports.
  • Experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.
  • Experience expressing complex and technical information orally and in writing, including in legal documents.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining good working relationships and collaborate with multiple agencies, internal and external stakeholders, and partners.
  • Experience with judicious handling of sensitive and confidential information.

PROVISO

  • Routinely exposed to difficult/unpleasant death situations, including reports, photos, and highly emotional circumstances surrounding child deaths.
  • May be required to travel outside of geographic location periodically.
  • Occasional travel may be required. Must have a valid driver's license and use of personal vehicle that is maintained in good and safe working condition, and with appropriate insurance.
