    The salary range for this position is:

    • Recruitment range: $95,521 - $119,276 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience, and internal equity.
    • Performance range: starting salary to max of $137,090 is available through annual performance increases.

    Job Summary

    Mandate/core purpose of role:

    Reporting to the Director, the Human Resources Consultant will work closely with leaders, union representatives, and employees to ensure compliance with collective agreements, labour laws, and university policies and procedures. The position is a business partner and broad HR technical expert to support leaders as they implement organizational strategies and goals. The position works independently and is responsible for the development and cultivation of productive relationships to support the university's people strategy and build an inclusive campus community.

    Objective:

    • Works closely with university leaders to align HR strategies with the organization's overall goals and objectives.
    • Builds strategic partnerships with leaders and unions to understand their needs and concerns.
    • Ensures the university is compliant with collective agreements, university policies and procedures, regulations, and legal requirements and is not exposed to undue risks.
    • Provides broad HR technical expertise in dispute resolution, negotiations, organizational design, workforce planning, talent management, change management, performance management and organizational behavior.
    • Provides guidance, coaching and support to leaders with HR issues, including talent acquisition, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, and compliance.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Acts as a liaison between the university and unions to ensure effective communication and adherence to collective agreements.
    • Provides guidance to managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, and collective agreement interpretation.
    • Collaborates with union leaders and management to resolve labour relations issues and grievances.
    • Prepares step one grievance responses, conducts labour law research and supports the arbitration process.
    • Partners with the HR team to design and implement HR programs and initiatives that align with business objectives and collective agreements.
    • Supports collective bargaining, implements negotiated collective agreements and provides advice and guidance regarding contract interpretation.
    • Supports leaders with investigations into employee complaints, grievances, and workplace disputes.
    • Collaborates with leaders and HR colleagues to develop and implement HR strategies that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
    • Builds and maintains strategic partnerships with leaders, unions and HR colleagues.
    • Analyzes HR data and metrics to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Develops and implements HR initiatives that promote employee engagement, productivity and retention.
    • Provides expert guidance and coaching to leaders on employee relations matters, performance management, and disciplinary actions.
    • Participates or leads joint committees to create strategies or implement programs that address the needs of the workforce.
    • Monitors and ensure compliance with HR policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
    • Manages HR initiatives and projects and leads educational training.
    • Keeps up-to-date with changes in labour laws, collective agreements, and HR best practices through on-going learning and development.
    Job Requirements

    University degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field and five years of related work experience in a complex unionized organization, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

    • Demonstrated commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect, equity, diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
    • Ability to apply principles of decolonization, anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion to labour relations related matters.
    • Comprehensive and current knowledge of labour laws, regulations, and HR best practices.
    • Ability to adapt to workplace changes and to support client managers with organizational change plans and implementation.
    • Experience managing adversarial situations where there is conflict and leading conflict resolution.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Experience working with highly confidential and sensitive information with empathy and compassion.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with managers, union representatives, employees, and HR colleagues.
    • Proven track record of successfully managing HR initiatives and projects.
    • Designation as a Chartered Professional in Human Resources or other HR certification is an asset.
