Your opportunity:


The Human Biology Program at the University of Toronto is responsible for the meticulous undergraduate education in the interdisciplinary field of human biology.

We strive to prepare students for future careers where an interdisciplinary education would be an asset, such as academic research and teaching, health professions, and public policy on research, health, education, and the environment.

Strong academic relationships with other units are a key to the program's success, by engaging the diversity and excellence of scholars in these other units to teach in our courses.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process. Collecting experimental data, verifying results, and passing on findings. Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected.
  • Scheduling the use of lab equipment and resources. Setting up teaching laboratories according to research and/or course schedules. Preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment and supplies for the laboratory exercises used in the teaching labs.
  • Conducting, modifying, and testing trial runs of experimental techniques and methods, and testing new media and products.
  • Ensuring solutions, media, equipment etc. are available to students in sufficient qualities and meets set standards.
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment repairs. Knowledge and troubleshooting of laboratory A/V systems relating to teaching.
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures, and protocols.
  • Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment
  • Maintaining inventory of glass and dishware, workstations, chemicals and/or apparatus within the lab. Ordering supplies with approval Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within proximity to others. Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in biological science or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of recent and related experience working as a Laboratory Technician in an undergraduate teaching laboratory.
  • Experience setting up teaching laboratories according to research and/or course schedules.
  • Experience with preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment, and supplies for the teaching laboratory exercises and/or the use of new methods used in the teaching labs.
  • Experience serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment.
  • Experience with ensuring that all laboratory preparatory, classrooms and equipment are maintained in a clean state.
  • Experience with providing detailed explanations and demonstrations of experiments, media, solutions and reagents, procedures, laboratory techniques and the safe use of lab equipment.
  • Experience working with and performing basic repairs to microscopes.
  • Experience with troubleshooting routine equipment repairs, including laboratory A/V systems relating to teaching.
  • Experience preparing and testing of all reagents (biological and chemical) required for experiments.
  • Experience conducting and collecting experimental data, verifying results, and preparing reports from data collected.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to efficiently interact with students, course instructors, teaching assistants and other members of the Human Biology Program team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Shows good judgement and accuracy
