Description

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Instruction responsible for Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator assists and supports Indigenous children, youth and families with well-being, identifying systemic barriers, connecting Indigenous students to culture, building partnerships among schools, and with the local First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and organizations in support of Indigenous student success.

The primary objectives of this position are to improve the experiences of Indigenous children, youth and families.

Key areas include (but not limited to):

  • Creating opportunities for Indigenous children and youth to learn and participate in culture, traditions and language
  • Developing consistent holistic wellbeing of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students;
  • Developing a strong, respectful working relationship with local First Nations, Métis and Inuit families, communities, organizations, Elders, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers throughout the Ottawa area;
  • Ensuring structures and strategies are in place to engage, mentor, monitor and meet the learning needs and stated aspirations of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.
  • Providing support to the school community (Principals, Teachers).
  • Experience deeply rooted in local Indigenous communities is required for the position.
  • Identification as a First Nation, Métis or Inuit community member and lived experience with systemic oppression is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language, culture, customs and traditions; the Ontario First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework and Implementation Plan.
  • Knowledge of relevant Board policies, procedures, current educational and ethnocultural equity issues;
  • Skills to support and advocate for students and their families in complex social, emotional, behavioral situations; maintain close working relationships with school personnel and other board support staff through regular school visits; and promote and/or maintain positive relations between school and home.
  • Skills to motivate students, mediate, exchange and clarify information with students; and resolve conflicts/problems with students and District personnel.
  • Organization and time management skills to plan, prioritize work, and to deal with multiple schools, Kindergarten to Grade 1
  • Research and presentation skills for planning and conducting workshops.
  • Ability to gather and evaluate information from a range of sources such as individual interviews, school setting observations, collateral contacts with agencies and professionals, documents.
  • Working as part of a team and in a culturally diverse environment; and can work with mínimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in word processing, desktop publishing and databases, and ability to use a variety of other computer software programs.
  • Access to reliable transportation for local travel between schools.

Job Types:
Full-time, Fixed term contract


Salary:
$54,674.00-$70,594.00 per year
