University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) is a community peace officer agency.

UAPS provides a number of services to the University of Alberta, including:

General Patrol and Incident Response, Complaint Investigation, Accident Response, Traffic Safety Enforcement, Public Education Services, Community Assistance Team (CAT), Alarm Response, Special Duty Services, Community Liaison Officer Program, Controlled Goods Program, Security Survey (CPTED Audits), and Victim Support.


Position
University of Alberta Peace Officers operate in an inclusive, dynamic and challenging environment. Peace officers receive initial and ongoing in-service training and have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments.


Reporting to the UAPS Operations Manager, the primary role of Strategic Community Response Team (SCRT) Peace Officers is to reduce crime, victimization and safety incidents, largely achieved through intelligence led, proactive and response activities.


The successful applicants must be eligible for a Community Level One Peace Officer appointment from the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Public Security Peace Officer Program, and complete selection and training requirements.

Please note that this position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays.

SCRT Peace Officers have the opportunity to access to a variety of educational and personal development programs including recreational and fitness facilities.


Duties

  • The SCRT Peace Officer will participate in special initiatives designed to reduce disruption to University activities, crime and other social disorder. This will include intelligence led strategic patrols, community engagement and outreach sessions designed to address public safety and security concerns.
  • Conduct highly visible proactive vehicle, foot and bike patrols of University buildings and grounds; including, outlying University properties and University buildings. These patrols, as directed by the Operations Manager, are intelligence and data driven.
  • Participate in conducting various crime preventiontraining programs, as directed to promote public awareness of crime risk and reduction methodologies.
  • Collect information to support the intelligence gathering and analysis function through established processes identified in UAPS policy.
  • Engage in traffic education and enforcement activities in line with the UAPS Traffic Safety Strategic Plan.
  • Provide emergency first aid and mental health first aid assistance to members of the University community and to visitors.
  • Help facilitate a police response to investigate criminal matters: including, where known weapons are either suspected or reported and attempt to minimize the safety risk or threat lo others persons in the vicinity.
  • Complete witness statements, incident reports, and present testimony in court or other hearings or tribunals concerning provincial offences, specified criminal offences, and disciplinary matters.
  • Maintain knowledge of Security Systems and Video Monitoring program, which includes contractual security services, provided by UAPS, security cameras, alarm systems as well as the operational and evidence procedures.
  • Detect violations of University regulation, makes violator contacts and when necessary issues warning or violation notices (under the Student Code of Conduct).
