Position Summary
The primary role of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Manager is to support research projects within the department. They will supervise and support research nurses, coordinators, analysts and students to help guide them in completing research projects.

The Research Manager will assist and support primary investigators in research proposals and to help to ensure budgets are robust enough to support additional research personnel to lead the project.

The Research Manager will ensure a cost-recovery system for Investigator sponsored studies. They will be responsible for training, supervision and evaluation of the research team members.


Reporting to the Director of Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, the research manager will work alongside an inter-professional team, including staff, physicians, learners, and community partners.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide overall support and coordination to multiple clinician researchers and their study teams, physicians, and learners
  • Prepares job postings, and oversees the recruitment/hiring of new staff.
  • Responsible for training and day to day guidance and coordination of Research Nurses, Coordinators, Analysts and Students, including ongoing updates of various research guidelines and regulations, both internal to UHN and with external partners
  • Develop and/or authorize research study budgets and payment schedules
  • Generation of personnel reports
  • Negotiate terms of financing with outside parties
  • Contributes to professional publications, presentations, and posters
  • Provide training for and enforce standard operating procedures
  • Develop, implement, and maintain high quality clinical trials procedures and processes
  • Ensure project goals, objectives and deliverables are met within the required timeline, proactively manage changes in study scope, identify potential risks, and devising/implementing contingency plans
  • Develop and negotiate research agreements and strategic alliances with internal and external parties and stakeholders
  • Carry out duties of Principal Investigator, or coinvestigator in research studies as authorized by the investigators and sponsors
  • In conjunction with the Office of Research Administration, review of all confidentiality statements, legal disclosures, and legal documents
  • Update the Principal Investigator and study team on clinical trials activities including administrative, protocolrelated, data management, quality and regulatory issues
  • Chair research weekly meetings
  • Participate in knowledge translation activities, including but not limited to presentations, policy updates, and reports as required
  • Liaise with investigators, administrative staff, sponsors, and clinical trials staff and develop excellent communication strategies
  • Support initiation and development of research proposals and protocols
  • Serve as key client contact for assigned projects, establishing working relationships with client project teams which result in client satisfaction, and operational excellence.
  • Accountable for project delivery with regards to agreed time, scope, cost and quality
  • Lead core project team(s) and facilitate team's ability to lead extended project team(s), ensuring effective crossfunctional teamwork among project team members including both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as escalation point for project issues to internal and external stakeholders, as appropriate
  • Proactively identify and resolve conflicts as needed
  • Understand the project delivery strategy, costing assumptions and resulting budget for assigned project(s).
  • Deliver project(s) to scope, schedule and costs, ensuring all remain on track with the contract
