Compensation Range

Job Summary


The Geering Up School Programs Coordinator (the Coordinator) is responsible for the programming and day-to-day operations of all Vancouver based, Geering Up school-board partnerships including workshops and professional development activities.

Operating year-round, Geering Up in-school workshops and professional development events engage thousands of students and hundreds of teachers in communities across the province.


The Coordinator is responsible for delivering on Geering Up's school-board engagement mandate by building strong relationships with school boards that address local STEM education needs, developing programs to train teachers in inclusive STEM delivery, developing programs that support STEM credit retention of traditionally under-represented youth, and supervising workshop programs that supplement teacher's STEM lessons.

Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, School Programs, the Coordinator will be responsible for planning, curriculum development, implementation, personnel management, and evaluation of the above programming.

The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that these programs are safe, inclusive, and aligned with the values of the outreach office.

Organizational Status


UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach (Geering Up) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) learning opportunities with families across BC, with special outreach programs for groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields.

We believe that STEM education needs to be hands-on, inquiry driven, and accessible. Over the past 25 years, we have worked with over 150,000 youth.

The work of this position directly addresses the Faculty of Applied Science's goal to make its programs more accessible and welcoming to all learners.

Due to the nature of the work, vacations are restricted during the peak programming months. In order to deliver and supervise programming, some work will be required on evenings and weekends.

When required to work an evening or a Saturday, the schedule for this position will be adjusted in lieu in consultation with the incumbent.

The Coordinator will work closely with various departments and organizations internal and external to UBC including:

  • School boards, teachers, parents, and community groups;
  • Faculty members in the Engineering departments and programs;
  • Aligned nonprofit organizations from BC and Canada.
Work Performed

Programming

  • Leads the strategy to engage teachers at local school districts and build a strong relationship with local teachers, principals, and school boards
  • Develops and coordinates activities with local school boards including responding to local schoolboard priorities. Activities include, but are not limited to, oneday professional development events, afterschool professional development workshops, summer training programs, professional development workshops at educator conferences, online courses for educators, and inschool workshops for youth
  • Leads the development and implementation of program curriculum, for participants Grades K 12 and teachers, guiding student curriculum assistants through the process of designing and testing new activities. This curriculum includes computer science curriculum, and engineering and science curriculum activities.
Staff and Volunteer Management

  • In order to achieve their school program outreach goals, the Coordinator will also assist the Camps Coordinator in recruiting, training, and managing a team of student workshop Instructors and student outreach assistants.
  • Conducts Instructor staff meetings for workshop and teacher programs.
Program Administration

  • Assists communications between Applied Science Outreach and local school districts, principals, and teachers
  • Professional development and school workshop registration
  • Adheres to the school program budget, handles space rental contracts
  • Ensures the safety of participants in school programs creating safety plans and reviewing curriculum and training for suitability
