    Compensation Range

    $12, $19,325.92 CAD Monthly

    The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

    Job Description Summary

    The Faculty of Medicine's (FoM) Strategic Plan and core values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration and equity can best be realized by fostering learning and work environments committed to diversity, inclusion, and the exercise of human rights.

    The Executive Director of the Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) will support the development and promotion of learning and work environments that are respectful, anti-racist, discrimination-free, inclusive and equitable.

    The Executive Director will oversee the development of respectful environment, anti-racist and anti-discrimination skill development and training incorporating principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, to empower members of the Faculty community to fully participate in our learning and work environments. This includes participating in determining metrics and providing data to support the evaluation and reporting related to respectful environments and EDI within the FoM.

    The Executive Director will provide strategic direction on the development and implementation of an operational framework for addressing conduct in the FoM's learning and work environments that includes informal interventions, educational supports, inquiries, formal investigations, and alternative dispute resolution processes where indicated. The operational framework must align with accreditation requirements for professional disciplines within the Faculty of Medicine, must be consistent with UBC policies, Equity and Inclusion Office practices, and must reflect the principles of procedural fairness.

    The Faculty—comprised of approximately 2,200 administrative support, technical/research and management and professional staff, as well approximately 650 full-time academic and over 10,000 clinical faculty members—is composed of 19 academic basic science and/or clinical departments, 3 schools, and 25 research centres and institutes. Together with its University and Health Authority partners, the Faculty delivers innovative programs and conducts research in the areas of health and life sciences. Faculty, staff and trainees are located at university campuses, clinical academic campuses in hospital settings and other regionally based centres across the province.

    The UBC Vancouver Campus is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. The City of Vancouver is located on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations territory.

    Work Performed

    Providing leadership, strategic direction, guidance and support to all units within FoM to foster respectful, equitable and inclusive learning and work environments, maintain professionalism, reflect our core values in research, teaching and service activities, and align with UBC policies and accreditation standards.

    Providing strategic and tactical direction for alignment of FoM academic and administrative units with the work of the FoM REDI Office and the UBC Equity and Inclusion Office.

    Collaborating with senior leadership across FoM to equip them to support respectful, inclusive working and learning environments, and to address situations where Faculty values or principles of equity and inclusion are undermined or not supported appropriately.

    Providing educational leadership in the areas of professionalism and creating respectful, anti-racist, anti-discrimination and inclusive environments. Proactively leading and supporting change with oversight of training and skill building initiatives that enhance work and learning environments.

    Working as a change agent with the FoM leadership, and academic and administrative unit stakeholders, in shaping and fostering continuous improvement, transformation and innovation related to respectful environments, equity and inclusion.

    Developing strategies, providing direction, identifying issues, researching best practices, assessing impacts, tracking progress across FoM, and making linkages between operational commitments and FoM strategies.

    Collaborating with the Vice Dean, Health Engagement to coordinate and collaborate with the Health Authorities to address those aspects of the learning environment outside the direct control of the educational and academic leadership of the FoM.

    Establishing short and long term performance objectives and operational plans for the REDI Office consistent with the FoM's Strategic Plan, as well as with other strategic commitments and values of the university related to equity, inclusion, Indigenization and decolonization (e.g., Indigenous Strategic Plan, Equity and Inclusion Office's Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism Framework, Respectful Environment Statement, FoM Professionalism Standards).

    Developing strategies to promote and increase cooperation and coordination between FoM constituents responsible for the promotion of a culture of professionalism, respect, inclusion and diversity in the work and learning environments.

    Remaining current on external research, events, media, education and activities related to EDI and respectful environments with a particular focus in the academic and medical/health fields.

    Collaborating with and providing guidance and support to academic and administrative leadership in addressing issues of learner mistreatment and/or breaches of the Professionalism Standards and maintaining data collection and analysis related to reports of concerns for these issues.

    Developing reporting procedures to ensure fair and inclusive inquiry processes and interventions.

    Seeking advice on legal risks contained in complaints that may compromise the safety and security of staff, faculty, learners or the public.

    Work with partners to establish terms of reference for internal and external investigators and alternative resolution processes.

    Engaging where necessary with UBC decision makers, health authority representatives, or other governing bodies regarding decisions or actions resulting from an investigative report, and providing required supports.

    Overseeing compliance with policies and procedures in response to acts of retaliation, including with external organizations where necessary.

    Liaising with UBC and FoM and units, including educational programs, on resources that relate to concerns in the work and learning environments and ensuring appropriate referral and cooperation to resolve those concerns.

    Liaising with external organizations, such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and other professional colleges, to make appropriate referrals and foster cooperation to resolve EDI concerns in the working and learning environment.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement

    The Executive Director is in a position of responsibility and trust, receiving highly sensitive and confidential information. Careful management of information is essential in maintaining the credibility of the Office.

    The result of inaccurate or inappropriate advice or neglect of duties could result in the Faculty and UBC's failure to comply with federal, provincial and other legislative bodies and result in liability, formal complaints and negative publicity to the FoM and the University.

    Supervision Received

    Works with full latitude and is reviewed in terms of the achievement of goals of the Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Reports to the Dean of Medicine, and works closely with members of the Dean's Executive and other senior leadership across the FoM.

    Supervision Given

    Manages and directs a team of an Associate Director and several management and support staff.

    Minimum Qualifications

    University degree in a relevant discipline plus a minimum of 10 years' experience, including senior level experience with negotiation, conflict resolution and mediation.

    Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in a large multi-functional, complex unionized organization, with higher education or health care settings preferred.

    Demonstrated experience leading strategic EDI initiatives, navigating complex conflict situations and creating cultural change to advance equity, justice, inclusion and anti-racism for historically and systematically marginalized people, populations or communities with different intersectional identities.

    Ability to work with leaders to promote FoM values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity, and where civility, diversity, opportunity, inclusion and cultural safety are paramount.

    Experience conducting investigations, mediations and facilitating conflict resolution.

    Understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, In Plain Sight Report recommendations, and UNDRIP and related legislation.

    Understanding of the experiences and barriers faced by historically and systemically marginalized people, populations and communities, and evidence-based practices on mitigating these barriers and advancing human rights. Experience and understanding of the BC Human Rights Code as well as some familiarity with employment law related to equity and inclusion preferred.

    Willingness to seek to understand and be respectful of diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.

    Demonstrated commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Humility, flexibility and a growth mind-set to learn about different intersectional identities and experiences.

    Excellent communication, interpersonal and intercultural skills, and management, organization and planning abilities.

    Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines within allocated time and resources.

    Ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment at all times.

    Computer experience required, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, experience with databases.
