Job Overview

Duties

  • Plan, organize, implement and enforce educational programs for all newly hired employees in collaboration with Department Manager. Ensure that the preemployment education program includes mandatory educational components, documentation/reporting, staff training on proper equipment use, infection control, health & safety in workplace;
  • Prepare and maintain a master staff education schedule for all departments, including the mandatory programs required under the LTC Act/Regulation. Ensure each employee completes listed programs within the time specified under the Act/Regulation (Surge Learning). Provide assistance to staff as needed. Prepare a list of employees not meeting compliance and forward to Department Head.
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct inhouse presentations and/or workshops when new policies, programs and services are being introduced by the government or other related governing agencies affecting staff educational needs/performance;
  • Under the direction of the Administrator, assess the need for departmental staff to attend community based educational programs, withing the approved budget.
  • In collaboration with Programs Director, review employee injuries/WSIB claims and ensure oneonone education is provided to the employees claiming work injury. The education will be tailored to the type injury claimed.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in annual program evaluation in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. Determine and develop educational goals and objectives based on identified learning needs within each program, including the target dates to achieve compliance.
  • Assist in implementing the Home's model/ framework for quality improvement initiatives with regard to resident care.
  • Where applicable, evaluate effectiveness of clinical records to ensure adherence with documentation policies and procedures, College of Nurses of Ontario protocol, and LTC Act/Regs. Plan and organize education as needed. This may be done oneonone with individual employee or a group session.
  • On a scheduled basis, conduct departmental audits/ reviews.


Based on audit reviews, work closely with other managers to ensure that the appropriate documentation is in place as per policy.

If needed, schedule nursing documentation workshop;

  • Review departmental risk indicators and tracking records related to residents falls, injuries, pain, wounds, restraints, behaviour, infections, continence, medication use, etc. Work closely with the QI Coordinator and Department Managers in determining staff educational needs based on the negative outcomes identified.
  • Audit resident care plans on a scheduled basis and ensure documentation accurately reflects the resident's care requirements.
  • Support the management team in adopting a CQI approach through focused education and other resources, related to resident care, programs and services.
  • Act as a resource for staff seeking to increase knowledge and skill level techniques and processes.
  • Provide support for the implementation of new projects related to nursing, dietary, activation, and personal care programs and services using a process of planned change.
  • Plan and provide educational inservice on clinical documentation as required and based on identified needs.
  • Monitor progress of interventions on a regular basis and report findings to Administrator.
  • Participate in the evaluation of probationary staff. Review Performance evaluation (10 shifts) and assist with educational needs as may be required;
  • Review all reports from the Ministry/PHU/Fire Dept. and other regulatory bodies, to identify educational programs required to improve the standards of care and services provided to the residents.
  • Where appropriate, actively participate (in collaboration with Registered Staff) in the supervision of clinical practise on the nursing units, if required.
  • As needed, participate in annual performance evaluations of facility staff.
  • Coordinate staff education at least 2 times annually on Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety, job safety, and environmental safety. Conduct Hand Hygiene tests on a scheduled basis. Observe staff practices and report any concerns to Senior Management Committee;
  • Prepare reports on a quarterly basis, as requested.
  • Maintain records of all staff education provided
  • Recruit outside sources to provide inhouse educational programs based on regulatory changes and identified, resident, family and staff needs;
  • Coordinate guest speakers by external educators or service providers, e.g. Fire Department, Police Department, PH Department, etc.;
  • Work in collaboration with the QI Coordinator in the implementation and maintenance of the Continuous Quality Improvement Program (Annual QIP submission);
