City Experiences is seeking a Captain for our City Cruises operation in Toronto.
Please note, this is a seasonal contract position.

About the Opportunity:


The Captain operates Transport Canada inspected passenger vessels in the in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the crew and passengers, enjoyment of the passengers, and respect for the environment.

The Captain greets all guests and ensures each guest is attended to in an appropriate manner ensuring consistently high levels of safety, quality, service, and guest satisfaction, while maintaining a high level of profitability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Overall responsible for the safety and security of the passengers, ship crew and the vessel.
  • Assign deck crew tasks and provide direction.
  • Stand bridge watch and ensure the safe navigation and maneuvering of the vessel.
  • Ensure all the navigation charts are up to date and Bridge equipment in in working condition.
  • Ensure all the Lifesaving and firefighting equipment are in readiness condition.
  • Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System.
  • Responsible for the precruise preparation, supervision of crew, proper piloting of vessel and vessel reporting system.
  • Conduct precruise meetings and communicate to crew all necessary information regarding the cruise (special needs, boarding procedures, etc.)
  • Carry out regular safety inspections of the boat and ensure that the ship is in seaworthiness
  • Gather pertinent cruise event details from the other departments to ensure special guest requests are fulfilled, thereby ensuring complete guest satisfaction.
  • Ensure that staff and guests adhere to all safety standards and procedures.
  • Ensure that the crew wears the proper PPE, especially when carrying out critical activities.
  • Organize and Participate in the execution of the Safety Program, including emergency drills and report any shortcoming to the Marine Director.
  • Participate as required in the proper maintenance of all ship's systems and boarding facilities, including but not limited to pumping in or out of water (potable, raw, black, and gray) gangways, communications, navigation, and Planned Maintenance System (Wheelhouse).
  • Carry out the various checks as required by the Planned Maintenance System.
  • Stand watch to look for obstructions in a ship's path or locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
  • Ensure adherence to Transport Canada rules and regulations and other federal and local rules and regulations.
  • Ensure strict compliance to Emergency Response and Evacuation Plan.
  • Execute other projects as assigned by management.
  • Deliver training and vessel familiarization to new crew.
  • Adhere to Company's performance management guidelines for all discipline and termination situations.
  • Develop positive working relationships with department heads and peers.
  • Develop strong teamwork within the staff.
  • Resolve guest problems in conjunction with the onduty Restaurant Manager utilizing strong guest service skills and exercising effective communication skills in keeping with company objectives and guest retention.
  • Complete all shift records: checklist, logbook (Deck & Engine), Radio log, and safety training documentation.
  • Ensure that the accident/incident/Near miss forms are duly filled, reported and sent to the Director of Marine.
  • Ensure that the monthly safety inspection of the vessel is carried out at regular intervals.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the vessel and assist in the Sanitization of the boat as required.
  • Load or unload materials from vessels.
  • Ensure safe means of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and crew.
  • Handle lines to moor vessels to the pier when necessary.
  • Assist Engineer in operating and maintain ship equipment such as engines and generators. Escalate any mechanical or maintenance issues to the Director of Marine.
  • Be prepared to begin work at the scheduled time.
  • Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
  • Additional job duties as assigned

Requirements & Qualifications:


  • Master 150 Gross Tonnage certificate
  • Current Marine Basic First Aid
  • Current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved marine medical certification
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the marine environment
  • Restricted Operator Certificate ROC-MC
  • Simulated Electronic Navigation (Limited)
  • A positive attitude and good work ethic
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 45 pounds (20 kilograms)
  • Walk, stand, sit and work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
  • Continually and repeatedly perform functions indoors and outdoors
