Job Purpose and Summary:


THP is currently embarking on a major project to transform some of its Business systems and is seconding its Manager Financial Accounting to the project.

As a result, THP requires an individual to handle the day to day operations of the Financial Accounting department during the Business systems transformation project.


As a member of the leadership team, the Manager, Financial Accounting is responsible for supporting the development of a high performing team within Financial Services, including the General Accounting and Accounts Payable functions, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the financial position and results of the Hospital, directing the external audit of the Hospital's annual financial statements, and ensuring the delivery of excellent customer service.

The Manager, Financial Accounting brings a high level of Public Sector Accounting Standards ("PSAS") knowledge, internal control expertise, operational expertise, and strong leadership skills to an important corporate service and a diverse team.

Key Areas of Focus:
  • Ensuring a highly effective, result
  • oriented General Accounting and Accounts Payable teams with focus on customer experience
  • Managing risk, assessing internal controls and identifying monitoring and mitigating strategies
  • Preparation of the monthly and annual financial statements of the organization
  • Planning and execution of the annual external audit of the Hospital's financial statements
  • Establishing, monitoring and reporting departmentspecific metrics
  • Developing departmentspecific initiatives that focus on improving service and streamlining operations
  • Effective and efficient resource management
  • Leadership support, direction and training to direct and indirect reports

Specific Accountabilities:


  • Prepare the monthly and annual financial statements of the organization in accordance with PSAS and other relevant standards,
  • Lead the annual external audit of the Hospital's financial statements; acts as a key liaison with the external auditors
  • Maintain a strong system of internal controls and regularly assesses their effectiveness, including through reviews of account reconciliations, variance analyses and other risk identification procedures
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and all applicable legislation such as the Excise Tax Act
  • Research complex transactions and advise on accounting and tax treatment, seeking external advice where required
  • Support the development of organizational policies and procedures related to financial transactions and reporting
  • Provide effective, efficient and quality services through management of staff, facilities and resources
  • Provide leadership to the General Accounting and Accounts Payable teams
  • Develop and implement innovative action plans to achieve required targets
  • Manage staff development by coaching and mentoring as well as identifying, supporting and facilitating staff continuing educational needs
  • Develop, plan and implement entrepreneurial and innovative ideas that enhance service delivery, cost effectiveness and support strategic initiatives

Key Qualifications:


  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field
  • A recognized accounting designation (CPA
  • CA preferred)
  • 35 years financial accounting management or leadership experience, preferably in health care environment
  • Demonstrated leadership potential
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of PSAS and regulations/legislation related to areas of functional responsibility
  • Strong people/project leadership skills and ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, including Senior Leadership, clinical and enabling services leadership, and other external partners such as THP banking provider, Shared Services West, and Mohawk Medbuy Corporation
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills combined with critical thinking and custom
