Grounds Maintenance / Heavy Equipment Operator, Facilities Services:


Required Position:

Full-Time Appointment


Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Manager of Grounds and Fleet the incumbent will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of outdoor spaces, ensuring a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment.

This position requires expertise in operating various heavy equipment, such as tractors, mowers, and loaders, to perform tasks related to roads, parking lots, and grounds.

The incumbent will conduct inspections of all university-owned property, outdoor facilities, and equipment to identify needed repairs and will report any issues to supervision.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Conduct inspections of grounds, roads, parking lots, and equipment to identify necessary repairs, and make recommendations to the Manager of Grounds and Fleet;
  • Prepare and submit requests for materials needed to complete assigned tasks;
  • Document property issues and descriptions of work performed on a daytoday basis and report to the Manager of Grounds and Fleet;
  • Operate power and hand tools as required;
  • Collaborate with contracted grounds crew and assist with any activities that may be required, such as hand shoveling/sweeping sand from parking lots and sidewalks, lawn maintenance, event setups, and special projects;
  • Repair and clear storm sewers to prevent flooding, ensure proper drainage, and clear culverts;
  • Collaborate with other team members to coordinate and execute outdoor maintenance projects in various weather conditions;
  • Perform other various ground maintenance duties as required.
Landscaping

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as mowing, edging, weeding, and pruning, to keep outdoor areas well maintained;
  • Assist in the planning and execution of landscaping projects;
  • Install, repair, and maintain landscape features, including irrigation systems, walkways, and outdoor structures;
  • Perform other various landscaping duties as required.
Heavy Equipment Operations

  • Operate heavy equipment, including tractors, mowers, loaders, and other equipment as required;
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment to ensure safety, proper function and perform minor repairs as needed;
  • Operate frontend loader for tasks such as leveling, loading materials, and snow removal; Coordinate and assist with the sanding of all sidewalks, parking lots, roads, and assist with the removal;
  • Operate forklift to transport and deliver materials;
  • Operate winter equipment for snow and ice control, including but not limited to frontend loader, plow truck with sander unit, and snow blower;
  • Operate summer equipment for grounds, roads, and parking lot maintenance, including but not limited to frontend loader, pickup truck, and lawn equipment;
  • Maintain infrastructure such as roads, parking lots, sidewalks, pathways, signage, drainage systems, and culverts.
Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance and safe operations of ground equipment and safety activities;
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while operating heavy equipment and performing outdoor maintenance tasks;
  • Identify potential safety hazards and take appropriate measures to address them;
